Pokemon: Original Series[]
Ash wanted Squirtle as his starter but realizes that all the starters are taken so he gets Pikachu as his starter. Later, He caught Pidgey and Rattata while failing to catch a Fearow. His Pikachu also protected him from the flock of Fearows. Ash later encounters Team Rocket for the first time where his Pikachu fights there Ekans and Koffing. He catches a Caterpie that soon evolves into Metapod.
Ash catches a Weedle while sending his Rattata to Oak's Lab. Later, His Metapod evolves into Butterfree while protecting him from a group of Beedrills. Ash loses to Brock but after training, He managed to defeat Brock along with Pikachu learning Thunderbolt and Pidgey evolving into Pidgeotto in the process. Ash later catches a Clefairy while Brock catches a Zubat earlier. He soon sends Clefairy to Oak's Lab to meet Rattata for the first time.
Ash wins against Misty with Weedle evolving into Kakuna in the process. Ash sends his Kakuna to Oak's Lab while catching a Bulbasaur. His Pidgeotto also helped Misty catch an Oddish. Ash also catches a Charmander after It was betrayed by Damian, Who is it's former trainer, Ash and his Charmander watch as Misty catch a Squirtle.
Ash has catch a Krabby and sends it to Oak's Lab for It to meet Rattata, Kakuna, and Clefairy. Ash catches a Raichu to pretend that his Pikachu evolved. Evenutally Raichu was defeated by Lt. Surge's causing Pikachu to come in and defeat Lt. Surge's Raichu. Soon, Ash sends Rattata back on his team. Ash's Rattata evolves into Raticate while fighting a trainer's Staryu only to be sent back to Oak's Lab later.
Ash later gets in a shipwreck where he catches a newly-released Gyarados. He catches a giant Tentacruel. Ash catches a Pink Butterfree and leaves It at Oak's Lab with his Butterfree so they can mate. Ash loses to Sabrina and It was also revealed that he sent his Gyarados to Oak's Lab. He catches a Haunter so It can defeat Sabrina's Kabadra. His dreams of Sabrina became true when his Haunter defeated her Kabadra.
Ash catches a Mankey. He later gets the Rainbow Badge for saving Erika's Gloom and also learned that his Kakuna evolved into Beedrill. Ash, Pikachu, and Pidgeotto meet a Hypno while trying to fight Team Rocket.

| James purchased his Gyarados as a Magikarp on the St. Anne in Battle Aboard the St. Anne. While on the ocean liner, the Magikarp salesman tricked him into buying Magikarp, claiming that he could breed it to sell more and more Magikarp. Blinded by the chance to become rich, James gladly accepted the deal. When he later told about his purchase to Jessie and Meowth, however, they revealed that he had been tricked: Magikarp was a completely useless Pokémon, and even its "gold" Poké Ball was just gold-plated. When James revealed that he had spent the advances on both his and Jessie's salaries to buy Magikarp, Jessie got furious, angrily telling him to return it immediately. However, before he could find the salesman again, Team Rocket's assault on the ship started, and James was forced to abandon his search to join the other Team Rocket Grunts. After the operation had been ruined by the passengers' rebellion, the rocking of the ship caused James to drop Magikarp's Poké Ball, and the trio kept chasing it throughout the ship, causing them to get trapped inside and knocked unconscious when the ship sunk soon after.
In Pokémon Shipwreck, when Team Rocket temporarily joined forces with Ash and his friends in order to escape the sunken ship, they appeared to lack a Water Pokémon to swim to the surface, at which point James revealed his Magikarp, believing that it could help them escape. Unfortunately, they soon found out that Magikarp wasn't able to swim at all, just splashing on its place. By sheer luck, the trio was carried to the surface when the ship flooded, along with Magikarp. The next day, when the group was starving with hunger, they started staring at Magikarp, thinking of eating it. However, when Meowth tried to take a bite out of it, their dreams of a Magikarp lunch were ruined, as, like Misty then mentioned, Magikarp is all skin and bones, making it completely inedible. At this point, James got extremely enraged at Magikarp, declaring that it was completely useless and he didn't want to be its master anymore, and kicked it off the raft. This proved to be a big mistake, as it caused Magikarp to evolve into a Gyarados. Furious at James's behavior, Gyarados completely ignored his attempt to reclaim its loyalty, and chased after the group. After it chased them for a while, it suddenly stopped and roared into the sky. Ash catches the Gyarados before multiple other Gyarados appeared, and unleashed a devastating Dragon Rage on the group, sending them flying in a watery tornado. Ash sends Gyarados to Oak's Lab. Gyarados only knows Splash and Dragon Rage. | ||

| Nastina then makes a public announcement offering the million dollars to anyone who exterminates the Tentacool and Tentacruel. The gang are nearly run over by the town's citizens, rushing to the beach to carry out Nastina's orders, and Nastina makes her way over to her loyal followers in a tank.</nowiki>
Team Rocket eagerly offers to help Nastina and set out on their boat. They plan on using their "Super Secret Stun Sauce" on the Pokémon and then selling them at a fish market for more money. However, their boat is soon surrounded by thousands of angry Tentacool, one of whom blasts the stun sauce with a raygun-like attack and destroys the boat. The sauce lands on that same Tentacool, but instead of being stunned, it evolves into a giant Tentacruel, and promptly begins a citywide rampage. Tentacool overwhelm the land, while the giant Tentacruel causes a tidal wave that floods Porta Vista. Meowth is captured by the large Tentacruel and is used as its mouthpiece. It explains that it is destroying the city in much the same way Nastina has been destroying its home, the coral reef. Horsea pleads with the Tentacruel to stop, but is swatted away by its tentacle, though Pidgeotto manages to catch the small Pokémon and bring it back to Misty. Ash and his friends send out their Pokémon to stop the Tentacruel, managing to return some of the Tentacool back to the ocean. The Tentacruel doesn't understand why the Pokémon would fight on the side of the humans, but then Misty stops it in its tracks. She climbs to the roof of a building and pleads with it to stop its rampage. She tells the Tentacruel that the humans now understand that what they were doing was wrong, and that the hotel won't be built on the coral reef. Tentacruel replies that if their homes are attacked again they will not stop the destruction, then tosses Meowth into a Ferris wheel in the previously destroyed amusement park, which then collapses and causes Meowth to reawaken. Tentacruel then slowly returns to the ocean, followed by the Tentacool. Nastina attempts once again to destroy the Tentacruel, but has her face blotched by Horsea's ink before being whacked into the air by the Tentacruel's tentacle. The giant Tentacruel was caught by Ash. None of Tentacruel's moves are known. | ||
