Ryan is the protagonist of A Just Edge. He is a total Pokémon novice, as when he starts out he only has an Abra. He has very little knowledge of Pokémon and Pokémon related things, and only has his items (Pokédex, Pokéballs, etc) because they were his father's, before his father retired from being a trainer, himself. Nonetheless, upon hearing of a new Indigo League tournament, he sets out to win enough badges to enter it. Ryan starts his journey at 14 years of age, making him older than most trainers when they start. Because his starter Pokémon is one of his father's and all of his items come from his father, Ryan never got the proper Pokémon sendoff by Professor Oak.

Ryan is mostly carefree. He was never good at school - as he ditched many a day - and decided to drop out to become a Pokémon trainer, due to his love of adventure. He can be emotional at times, but he is usually not very emotional around other people, unless he is scared or very overconfident. He has an incredibly close bond with his Pokémon, though his intelligence, in regards to Pokémon training and communication, is subpar. He doesn't know a lot about strategy in battle, either. This is mainly because of Ryan's laziness. He never spent time during his childhood researching and studying Pokémon battle strategy. This changes once he starts catching his own Pokémon; and he spends more and more of his free time between gyms trying to come up with movesets for his Pokémon. With the help of Kelly, Alex, Rahul, and the others, he becomes more competent as a trainer. Ryan can also become very arrogant and overconfident should he achieve some sort of victory, and this may hamper his short-term judgment abilities thereafter. Ryan's relationship with his parents is mixed; on the one hand, his mother didn't want him to become a trainer, due to his age. His father never even said goodbye to him before he left. After Ryan started winning badges, he tried to contact his parents a few times, though rarely did they seem to care about his accomplishments. While he makes few outward signs that such ignoring behavior affects him, it surely does alter his mental health.
