As Lunala

Janis's Lunala (Japanese: ジャニスのルナアーラ Janisu's Lunala) is the sixth Pokémon that Janis was known to own. Prior to its capture, Lunala was nicknamed Nebby (Japanese: ほしぐもちゃん Hoshigumo-chan) by Lillie.

New Era[]

Alola[]

As a Wild Pokémon[]

Lunala was initially a Pokémon in Lillie's care. It was one of two Cosmog obtained by the Aether Foundation for the purpose of opening Ultra Wormholes. Fearing for its safety, Lillie took one of the Cosmog and escaped from Aether Paradise, completely unaware there were actually two the entire time.

Lunala first appeared, where it escaped from Lillie's bag and ran off to Mahalo Trail, and was attacked by a group of wild Spearow. Lillie was too scared to help it, so Janis stepped in to save Nebby in her place. When she got to Nebby, it retaliated against the Spearow by releasing a shockwave, causing the bridge they were standing on to break apart underneath them. Janis and Nebby were rescued from falling in the water by Tapu Koko, who caught the two and brought them back to safe land.

Later, Professor Burnet accidentally caused Lillie to recall painful memories of a traumatic experience caused by her mother, Lusamine. Lillie's distress caused Nebby to fly out of her bag and begin clawing at the sky, nearly creating an Ultra Wormhole. After Lillie fainted, Nebby stopped and went down to check on her out of concern. After Ryder completed his second trial at the Abandoned Thrifty Megamart, he thanked the Rotom Pokédex for its help in the battle where it gave information about Tapu Bulu. To Ryder and Lillie's surprise, Rotom revealed it learned about Tapu Bulu from Nebby. Hoping that Rotom could translate Nebby's speech and speed up his job to deliver Mirage Berries to each of Alola's guardian deities, Ryder tried to get Nebby to come out. To their shock, Nebby emerged from Lillie's bag in the form of the motionless, cocoon-like Cosmoem.

Later, after arriving on Poni Island, Lillie and Gladion took Nebby with them as they traveled to the Poni Altar. A Xurkitree attacked the duo as they passed through Poni Wilds, forcing Gladion to battle it with Silvally. During the clash, Nebby flew out of Gladion's grasp and into the air where it reunited with its fellow Cosmog, who had also evolved into Cosmoem. The two Protostar Pokémon flew towards the Altar. Upon arriving, the guardian deities took Ryder and Janis and placed them on the Altar with the Sun and Moon Flutes. By playing the flutes together, Ryder and Janis caused the Altar to react and release a light that hit both Cosmoem.

The light caused Nebby and the other Cosmoem to evolve into Lunala and Solgaleo, respectively. With its newly-gained power, Lunala put Janis on its head and helped fend off the Ultra Beasts that had arrived to attack the Poni Altar. Shortly after, a larger than usual Ultra Wormhole appeared at the Altar with a Necrozma's hand emerging from it. The hand took control of Solgaleo's body. The possessed Solgaleo grabbed Ryder with its tail and jumped into the wormhole. Lunala activated its third eye and flew into the wormhole with Janis still on its head.

Some time after arriving in Ultra Space, Lunala got separated from Janis and Ryder.. At some point, it came in contact with the Ultra Recon Squad, who used Lunala to traverse through Ultra Space via Ultra Warp Ride. At the Ultra Deep Sea, Lunala reunited with Janis and Ryder, who had been trapped in the area for six months. After agreeing to work together, Ryder, Janis, and Zossie rode on Lunala's back so they could return to Alola. Dulse stayed behind as Lunala couldn't carry more than three people on it. Zossie taught Ryder how to use Ultra Warp Ride and told him and Janis about the various worlds the Ultra Beasts come from. After passing through an Ultra Wormhole, the three arrived at the Ultra Recon Squad's home world, the Ultra Megalopolis.

Shortly after landing, a Stakataka appeared, hoping to battle with Necrozma. After it captured Ryder, Stakataka attacked Janis, but she was protected by Lunala. Janis commanded Lunala to battle Stakataka, but it was unable to use its full strength without risking Ryder's safety. By firing an arrow at the Zygarde Cube in Ryder's bag, Janis released several Zygarde Cells that stuck onto Stakataka's eyes, blinding it and allowing Lunala to easily finish it off. The battle alerted Necrozma, who released Solgaleo and leapt from the Megalo Tower to try and absorb Lunala. Lunala tried fighting back, but was overpowered. Ryder and Janis sent out their Pokémon to help, but were stopped by Lusamine. Eventually, Lunala was absorbed by Necrozma, causing the latter to become its Dawn Wings form.

After successfully fusing, Lusamine attempts to capture Necrozma. Necrozma managed to flee to the top of Megalo Tower and opened an Ultra Wormhole that lead to Mount Lanakila. Once entering Alola, Necrozma absorbed the rest of Lunala's energy and released it onto Mount Lanakila. Eventually, Lunala woke up and reunited with Janis at Aether Paradise's Secret Labs. The two traveled back to Mount Lanakila and linked their auras. Janis gave Solgaleo a Max Revive while Ryder's Decidueye stopped Necrozma's movements with Spirit Shackle. With Necrozma's movements stopped, Lunala teamed up with Solgaleo and Zygarde and defeated the Prism Pokémon.

With Janis[]

Several months later, as Janis had recently, and permanently, moved to Alola, Lunala re-encountered with her and offered itself to become Janis's Pokémon, which the young Trainer gladly accepts. During the finals of the Manalo Conference, Lunala was the sixth and final remaining Pokémon chosen by Janis to face off against Ryder's Naganadel. Naganadel uses Venoshock, but Lunala uses Moongeist Beam to shield itself from the attack and proceeds to use the same move offensively when Naganadel uses Fell Stinger. Naganadel readies another Fell Stinger, but it is hit by Lunala's Moonblast. Ryder orders Dragon Pulse, but instead of hitting Lunala, the attack goes past it and hits the ground below, stirring a lot of dust, which skews Lunala's visibility. Naganadel lands a Fell Stinger on its opponent. Lunala charges through a barrage of Venoshocks to batter Naganadel with Moonblast and Phantom Force, which outruns Naganadel's Thunderbolt and defeats the Ultra Beast. Ryder takes a moment to thank Naganadel for its assistance before recalling it back to its Beast Ball.

Janis asks whether Ryder's Mimikyu or Crabominable could defeat it. However, Ryder grins and says that neither Pokémon would be present in the match, and shows off a Friend Ball and summons Solgaleo from it, which utterly shocks Janis and the entire audience. All four Island Kahunas jump from their seats as they marvel at the sight of both of Alola's Legendary Pokémon and realize they were about to witness a battle between the two Legendary Pokémon at the finals of the first-ever Alola League. Ryder starts off by commanding Flash Cannon, and the attack collides with Lunala's Hyper Beam. Solgaleo then uses Sunsteel Strike, but it fails to strike the airborne Lunala. Janis orders Lunala to retaliate with Moongeist Beam, but Solgaleo leaps out of the way and counters with Zen Headbutt. Lunala prepares to use Hyper Beam, but Ryder calls for a Flash Cannon, which contains the attack. Lunala is again stunned by the stirred dust, allowing Solgaleo to land a clean hit with Wild Charge, and send it towards the battlefield. Solgaleo follows up with Zen Headbutt, pinning Lunala to the ground. Lunala attempts to recover itself, but Solgaleo stops it with Flash Cannon, creating a blinding yellow explosion.

After the explosion has cleared up, both Legendary Pokémon manage to stand back up and continue fighting. Just then, Tapu Koko approaches Janis and Ryder, pointing at their Z-Rings. Ryder and Janis realize that Tapu Koko wants them to launch a Z-Move. Determined, Tapu Koko breaks out into sing and summons its fellow guardian deities to Manalo Stadium. The united quartet begin harmonizing together, showering the stadium in glittering scales. Both Ryder and Janis's Z-Rings start glowing, signaling that their Z-Power have been upgraded into a Z-Power Ring. Tapu Koko also offers Ryder and Janis a Solganium Z and Lunalium Z crystal, respectively, previously thought to have been only an ancient myth. Ryder and Janis are taken aback, but comply with Tapu Koko's offer. Janis calls out to Ryder and orders him to launch his Z-Move at the same time, which Ryder happily agrees to. Janis performs the Z-Pose pose perfectly, passing on the ancient power to Lunala, and prepares to unleash Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom.

Everyone in the stadium is startled by the sheer power Ryder has to now face. Ryder also performs the Z-Pose perfectly and transfers all of the ring's Z-Power into Solgaleo, allowing it to unleash Searing Sunraze Smash, and the two signature Z-Moves clash. Ryder and Solgaleo briefly find themselves in a white void, where Ryder and Solgaleo speak with each other, with Solgaleo telling him how it was glad to have met him, and now it was time to become one with him. With extreme effort, Solgaleo's ultimate Z-Move finally overpowers Lunala's, enveloping Lunala in a bright burst of energy. The blinding collision clears, with Ryder and Solgaleo visibly exhausted by the combined effort. Lunala begins to descend gently, before collapsing onto the debris-littered field. Hala makes the official judgment, ruling Lunala unable to battle and proclaiming Ryder as the winner of the match, and of the Alola League altogether.

World Tournament[]

During the second round match-up of the Pokémon World Tournament, which was contested under Double Battle rules, Janis selected Lunala and Vikavolt to battle against Leon's Charizard and Aegislash. Janis commands Vikavolt to use Thunderbolt, but Aegislash blocks with King's Shield. Lunala then interjects and fires off a Moongeist Beam towards Charizard, who swiftly dodges the attack and fires off a Blast Burn, and the attack lands and surprisingly knocks out Lunala, leaving both Ryder and Janis stunned, as they were both aware of Lunala's might as a Legendary Pokémon.

Leon simply exclaims that he couldn't afford to lose, and that nothing would prevent him from achieving "champion time" and orders Aegislash to use Sacred Sword on Vikavolt. Vikavolt attempts to defend himself with Zap Cannon, but Aegislash easily cuts the attack in half before scoring a direct hit, and as Vikavolt barely manages to remain in the battle, Charizard swoops in and knocks him out with Air Slash. The referee declares Vikavolt unable to battle and awards the victory to Leon.

Personality and Characteristics[]

As a Cosmog, Lunala was easily overwhelmed and would often become frightened in stressful situations. When afraid, it would accidentally open Ultra Wormholes. Despite this, it would still try its hardest to protect others from danger. After evolving into Lunala, the Moone Pokémon became much more brave, quickly jumping in to save others. At the same time, Lunala developed a close bond with Lillie, Ryder, and Janis, especially with the latter, and would become hostile towards anyone who opposed them, seen when Lunala glared at Poipole and Zossie when they attempted to separate Lunala from Janis at Ultra Megalopolis.

Janis's bond with Janis was powerful enough to have Lunala willingly offer itself to become Janis's Pokémon, despite being a powerful Legendary Pokémon. When battling together, Lunala and Janis's power becomes incredibly overwhelming, so much that not even an Ultra Beast can defeat it, and only its fellow Legendary Pokémon, Solgaleo and its Trainer, Ryder, can stand a chance to defeat it.
