He was born in the Kanto region to Simon, a Normal Type Gym Leader in the Hoenn Region and Tracey, a retired Pokémon nurse and Rhyhorn racer. He and his family later moved to Pallet Town in the Kanto region. His father later left to be part of the Hoenn Gym Leaders.

Jon first appeared in Pokémon Journeys: Episode 1 as a young child at the age of 7, his father Simon gave him his first Pokémon a Pikachu as a gift as the family prepared to move to the Kanto region. A few years later Jon now old enough to get his trainer card arrives at Professor Oak's lab where he was given a Charmander he later nicknamed Vulcan and with his Charmander and Pikachu left to start his journey as a Pokémon trainer.

In the Black and White series, Jon traveled to the Unova region after becoming interested in traveling Unova to meet new Pokémon.
Soon after he started his journey, Jon met Bianca a young girl who is Professor Junipers assistant, and Cheren, who aspires to be a Pokémon Gym Leader.
As they journeyed, Jon and friends ended up again being caught up in Team Plasma's plot in Accumula Town where they were holding a rally trying to get people to join Team Plasma's cause. Following this rally Jon was approached and battled by a person named N. After this, Jon and his friends came across two Team Plasma Grunts at the Dreamyard who were trying to capture a Munna in order to get some Dream Mist to spread their message in people's dreams.
Later, as in their journey through the Chargestone Cave, the Shadow Triaded appeared and took Jon to N and the two battled again. Team Pl
asma appeared at Dragonspiral Tower where N awakened Reshiram. N planned to use Reshiram at the Vertress Conference to inspire people to release their Pokémon.
Jon battled N in the Semi-finals with the crowd cheering N on being inspired by his command of a Legendary Pokémon, as Zekrom defeated Jon's Pokémon the Dark stone in Jon's possession revealed itself to be Zekrom. The two Legendary Pokémon battled. The Vertress Conference was evacuated as Team Plasma's castle rose from the ground during the battle. Ghetsis announced his true intentions to the world as N and his Reshiram were defeated, he ordered the capture of both Legendary Pokémon.
As Team Plasma members swarmed the League, the Unova Gym Leaders and other trainers then appear to keep the sages busy while Jon and his friends searched the castle. After his defeat, Cheren and Alder took him away while N told Jon he will continue on with his goal.

As a Trainer, Jon has caught and befriended a sizable number of Pokémon over the course of the anime. His philosophy on training is that Pokémon are individuals and that a combination of trust, friendship, and hard work are needed to overcome adversity. Jon's battle style is generally speeding and his Pokémon often reflect these traits. Jon is very attached to his Pokémon and prefers to fight and train with them personally.
