Indigo League (AJE)

The Indigo League in A Just Edge is comprised of the 8 gyms of Kanto and the Indigo Plateau Conference. The Indigo League in this story is pretty much exactly how it was in the Pokémon anime, with a few subtle differences noted below.

Including all 8 Gyms, the Elite 4 members, and the Kanto Champion, every Pokémon type in Generation 1 is represented in the Indigo League, except for dragon type. Lance, the former Kanto Champion, or Derceyes, a dragon type researcher, can be considered the dragon type specialist of this region.

Gyms

Trainers must defeat all 8 Gym Leaders, thus earning all 8 badges, in order to participate in the next leg of the competition: the Indigo League Tournament. Five of the Gym Leaders by the time of AJE were the Gym Leaders when Ash started his journey in Kanto. Three new leaders exist: Forrest, Olivia, and Dylan. Forrest is the younger brother of Brock, the previous gym owner in Pewter City, and he officially took over that gym in canon. Olivia is the daughter of Blaine, who was growing too old to continue to maintain his gym by the time of A Just Edge. Dylan took over the Viridian City gym after Giovanni was removed from being its caretaker.

Note: because all of Forrest's Pokémon are also ground type, he is also considered to be a ground type Gym Leader; because all of Dylan's Pokémon are also normal type, he is also considered to be a normal type Gym Leader.

Indigo Plateau Conference

The Indigo Plateau Conference is an 8 round single-elimination tourney, starting with 256 entrants. Currently, the Indigo League only operates in relation to Kanto, though previously, both trainers from Kanto and from Johto could participate.

The first four rounds are deemed the preliminary rounds, and these serve to whittle down the competition from 256 trainers to 16. All matches are 3 on 3. No potions of any sort are allowed. Only one of each species of Pokémon is allowed on each team (thus, no one can use two Bellsprouts, etc.). A trainer's Pokémon is defeated if it is knocked out, refuses to battle, is recalled by its owner, or is put to sleep (each trainer may attempt to put only one opposing Pokémon per match to sleep). Once a trainer's 3 Pokémon satisfy any of those conditions, they are eliminated from the tournament. These four matches are played on rock, ice, grass, and water stages, and each trainer must win once on each stage before moving on.

The final four rounds of the Indigo Plateau Conference consists of the finals. The first round (the round of 32) is a 3 on 3 battle, and that follows the rules of the preliminary rounds. The succeeding three rounds are 6 on 6 battles, and several rules are changed for these rounds: first and foremost, recalling a Pokémon no longer results in a technical KO; trainers are allowed to switch Pokémon as much as they wish. Additionally, putting a Pokémon to sleep is not considered a KO, but a trainer is still only allowed to attempt to put one opposing Pokémon to sleep - trying to put a second Pokémon to sleep will result in disqualification. A Pokémon is KO'd if it is knocked unconscious or refuses to battle. No potions of any sort are allowed. Only one of each species of Pokémon is allowed on each team (thus, no one can use two Bellsprouts, etc.). After the semi-finals have been played (where the last four trainers battle one another), two additional matches are played out: the finals and the third-place match. The third-place match is always done before the finals, and that determines the order of the 3rd and 4th place finishers. Then, the final match, between the two remaining trainers, occurs. The winner of that match wins the Indigo Plateau Conference: their prizes include a large trophy, a cash prize, a place of honor amongst previous winners, and the title of League Winner.

Elite 4 and Champion

The competition does not end here, however. All League Winners are then escorted to the Elite 4's building in the Indigo Plateau, where they are then tasked with beating all four in a row. Of course, the League Winner is allowed to rest their Pokémon before challenging the Elite 4, but they cannot use any potions or go to a Pokémon Center between Elite 4 matches. If they lose at any point to any member, the competition is over, and the League Winner's progress is noted. They retain the title of League Winner, but gain no additional titles (which they would gain if they beat the Elite 4 members and the Kanto Champion).

If the League Winner beats all Elite 4 members in a row, they are then tasked with beating the leader of the Elite 4 - the Kanto Champion. Again, they may not use any potions or go to a Pokémon Center before facing the Champion, so whatever Pokémon they have left after defeating the Elite 4 are what they must use. If they beat the Champion, they become the new Kanto Champion, which is the highest and most prestigious trainer rank in the entire region. If they lose, they retain the title of League Winner and nothing else. If the League Winner becomes the Champion, they are then tasked with defending their title each successive year the Indigo Plateau Conference takes place, so long as the League Winner each year gets far enough to challenge them. The previous Champion may either attempt to take a spot on the Elite 4 (if they beat any Elite 4 member, they assume that member's spot) or retire from the Indigo Plateau Conference. Additionally, former Champions retain the title of Champion.

During the events of A Just Edge, Ryan became the new champion after defeating the Elite 4 and Ash.
