Kaia (Japanese: ケーア Keea) is a Pokémon Trainer hailed from Olivine City in the Johto region. She specializes in Water-type Pokémon.
Next Generation[]
Johto Returns[]
Kaia first appeared when she defended Felicia from August on the Pokémon Center at Blue Isle Point's Inland City, sending out her Buizel to team up with Felicia's Sylveon against August's Zangoose and Sandslash. August tells her not to interfere, but Kaia says that August has no merit to complain and he had two choices: walk away or battle both herself and Felicia. Realizing that Kaia seemed quite strong, August recalls his Pokémon and swears that he would get his revenge on them by winning the Whirl Cup before taking his leave. Felicia thanks Kaia for her help, and Kaia says it was her pleasure. Felicia comments that she can tell Kaia was strong just by looking at her Buizel, as its Water Gun was quite powerful. Kaia says that she was a Water-type specialist, hoping to become one of the world's greatest Water-type Pokémon Trainers. Kaia says she recognizes Felicia from her participation in the Indigo Plateau Conference a year earlier, and says that she, too, was challenging the Johto League. Felicia says this makes them rivals, a sentiment Kaia agrees, but says they could also be friends. Felicia says that she hopes to battle Kaia at the Whirl Cup as well, and she asks Felicia if she wanted to travel together to the site of the tournament, and Felicia agrees, saying she never traveled with someone before, and would enjoy the change of pace.
After they arrive in Scarlet City, the site of the Whirl Cup, Kaia and Felicia enter the tournament, with Kaia's first round doing well, as her Buizel Take Downs a Magikarp out of the competition. In her second round, Kaia's Pelipper manages to knock out a Seaking with a powerful Hydro Pump attack, allowing her to advance into the main Whirl Cup tournament. For the first round of the main tournament, Kaia and her Buizel knock out a Trainer and his Seadra with Iron Tail. The next morning, a large commotion alerts Kaia and Felicia to the screen featuring the matchups for that day's second-round battles. It turns out that Felicia is up against Kaia for the next round, and the two friends stare at each other in shock. A few hours later, Kaia and Felicia are ready for their two-on-two Whirl Cup match. Felicia first calls out Politoed and Kaia sends out Pelipper. Kaia starts things off by having Pelipper use Hydro Pump, but Politoed dives underwater to evade it. Politoed makes some swift movement through the water and he leaps high into the air to land a direct Brick Break attack. Pelipper is left dazed, but ducks to avoid Politoed's Mega Punch attack. Pelipper retaliates with an Aerial Ace which sends Politoed backward. Politoed isn't finished yet as he kicks off a pillar and then does a Bounce attack towards Pelipper. Kaia orders a Hydro Pump, but Politoed's Bounce pushes through his opponent to claim the round. Kaia recalls her fainted Pelipper and sends out Buizel. Felicia commands Politoed to unleash a Hydro Pump, but Buizel blocks it with his Sonic Boom before dishing out a Take Down attack.
As Felicia orders Politoed to counterattack with Mega Punch, Kaia tells Buizel to switch over to Sonic Boom, and the powerful soundwave connects with Politoed before his Mega Punch can hit, and Buizel follows up with a powerful Take Down, knocking out Politoed from the match. After recalling Politoed, Felicia then calls out Corsola to battle next. Felicia tells Corsola to attack with Water Gun, but Buizel dodges the attack and uses a Water Gun of his own, although Corsola dives underwater to evade the attack. Corsola then rams into Buizel with a powerful Tackle, sending Buizel crashing into the wall, although he quickly recovers and returns to the match. Felicia tells Corsola to use Tackle again, but Buizel manages to narrowly avoid it before using Sonic Boom, sending Corsola flying back, although she uses Recover right afterwards. Buizel continues unleash a flurry of attacks, with Corsola either Recovering from them, or diving underwater to dodge them. As Kaia realizes the water field itself was trouble, she decides to get rid of it, and she tells Buizel to climb atop of the highest pillar before diving on the pool while using his strongest Iron Tail attack. Buizel does so, and when the Iron Tail slams the water, it disperses away from the pool, soaking the audience and leaving the pool completely empty, and therefore making Corsola unable to dodge underwater anymore. As both Felicia and Corsola are caught off-guard, Kaia orders Buizel to use a barrage of Water Guns on Corsola, and it takes its toll, before finishing the match with a massive Iron Tail, knocking out Corsola and giving Kaia the victory, eliminating Felicia from the competition. After the match, Felicia and Kaia shake hands, with the former saying that she was indeed powerful, while Kaia telling Felicia that she battled wonderfully. Later that evening, as Felicia heals her Pokémon at the Pokémon Center, August approaches them and mocks Felicia for losing, although Kaia intervenes and says that August was eliminated far earlier, and by Felicia nonetheless. This makes August shut up, and he says he was leaving, having no more interest in the tournament, with Felicia telling him good riddance. A Trainer approaches Felicia and Kaia, and the latter instantly recognizes him from his clean sweep victory in the day's sixth match. He introduces himself as Maxwell and informs Kaia that he'll be her opponent in the third round. The pair exchange handshakes and wish each other luck for the next round.
The day of the third-round matches begins, where the Top 16 will be whittled to the Top 8 competitors. Kaia calls out her Poliwrath, and she is frightened when Maxwell calls out his Gyarados. Kaia tells Poliwrath to use Water Pulse, but Gyarados quickly charges up a Hyper Beam that blasts the Water Pulse attack back and knocks Poliwrath out of the match. Kaia remains confident and brings out Pelipper to the battlefield. At Maxwell's command, Gyarados uses Hydro Pump, but Kaia has Pelipper redirect the attack away with a Wing Attack. Gyarados fires a Hyper Beam to send the torrent of water towards Pelipper, though Pelipper dives down and the beam blows up behind it. Waiting a while, Kaia finishes Gyarados off with Blizzard. Maxwell then sends out his Chinchou. Maxwell has Chinchou aim its Spark at the sky. The electricity mixes with the clouds before firing down on Pelipper. Pelipper manages to narrowly dodge it before aiming a Hydro Pump at Chinchou. Chinchou, however, dodges the attack, while Pelipper is showings signs of exhaustion. Chinchou follows up with a Confuse Ray, but Pelipper flies down and dives underwater to avoid it. Chinchou dips its antennae into the water to use Confuse Ray again, and this time Pelipper gets confused. With Pelipper acting delirious, Chinchou finishes it off with a Water Gun. Kaia is defeated, and Maxwell moves on to the Top 8. That evening, Maxwell meets with Kaia and Felicia at the Center. Kaia congratulates him and wishes him good luck for the next round. The next day, Maxwell calls out his Golduck to go up against his opponent's Feraligatr in the finals of the Whirl Cup. After a fierce battle, Maxwell emerges victorious, winning the Whirl Cup as a result. By evening, the competition has drawn to a close and the award ceremony begins. Maxwell is gifted the Mystic Water pendant, with his opponent winning second place. The next day, Kaia, Felicia, and Maxwell watch the Colosseum once again flood as they reminisce about the good times they had competing in the Whirl Cup. Back at the Pokémon Center, Felicia realizes she didn't train at all her non-Water Pokémon for her rematch against CJ, and Kaia offers to help her train. Felicia thanks her, and says that the sole reason she entered the tournament was to help her Sylveon become stronger to deal with CJ's Fighting-type Pokémon. After Felicia explains everything behind her match with CJ, Kaia says she might have the perfect Pokémon to help her deal with it.
As part of their training, Felicia summons her Sylveon while Kaia brings out her Octillery. Kaia tells Felicia to battle her as if she was battling CJ. Felicia notes that Octillery will probably move like CJ's Grapploct and warns Sylveon to stay back as much as possible. Sylveon makes the first attack. Octillery evades the flurry of Disarming Voices before striking back with Psybeam, which manages to confuse Sylveon. In her daze, Sylveon is unable to escape Octillery's Wrap attack and is struck out by a direct blast of Octazooka. Felicia rushes over to Sylveon's side, while Kaia watches on silently, beginning to see Felicia's failing strategy. After Sylveon is healed by a Super Potion, Kaia tells them to prepare for the second round of training as she brings forth her Tentacruel. Felicia again warns Sylveon to keep her distance, while Kaia finally comes to the conclusion behind Felicia's failure to win. Sylveon starts off strong, evading an oncoming Bubble Beam while firing off several Disarming Voices. However, Sylveon gets too close to her opponent, and is battered away by a tentacle. Tentacruel follows on with a Bind before using Poison Sting, leaving Sylveon unable to battle, which seriously disappoints Felicia. Kaia recalls Tentacruel and gives Felicia a Full Restore to give it to Sylveon. After Sylveon recovers, Felicia apologizes to her for not being able to win, but Sylveon gently wraps her feelers around Felicia as a hug of sorts to reassure her Trainer. Kaia tells Felicia that the reason she couldn't win was because of her own fear of getting close to her opponent. Kaia further says that Felicia almost seems traumatized from her battle with CJ, and says that by fighting from a distance, Felicia is worrying too much about not getting close, which closes off her mind from any other type of strategy, and this tunnel vision of hers was the reason behind her losses. Kaia's words seem to resonate with Felicia, who understands what Kaia is trying to tell her. Felicia again apologizes to Sylveon and vows to defeat CJ, and thanks Kaia for all her help. Kaia says that she was hoping to meet her at the Johto League, and Felicia vows to qualify, saying she wanted a rematch against Kaia, who smiles and says that she was looking foward to it. After a handshake, Felicia embarks on a boat towards Cianwood City while Kaia stays behind to train her Pokémon.
Several months later, Kaia successfully qualifies for the Silver Conference, and meets up with Felicia once again, who introduces Kaia to her friends Lei and Pricilla Callaghan. Kaia manages to breeze through the screeing rounds without losing a single match. During the round-robin stage of the tournament, Kaia and Buizel see Pricilla's Smoochum with a strange old woman, and inform both Pricilla and Felicia of this, and subsequently help them try and find the missing Smoochum. Once they locate Smoochum, who had already been found by Felicia's Pikachu, Totodile, Sylveon, Pricilla's Miltank, and Karin's Espeon, Kaia and the others find them surrounded at a cliff by a gang of Grimer and Muk, and Kaia quickly saves them by blocking Muk's Sludge Bomb with Buizel's Sonic Boom before calming down the Grimer and Muk with a Soothe Bell. Afterwards, they discover that Grimer and Muk were angry because Totodile ate all their food, and Kaia helps gather large amounts of food to make up for it. Subsequently, Kaia also manages to pass through the round-robin stage to reach the Victory Tournament section of the Silver Conference. In the first round, Kaia finds herself facing Felicia in a Full Battle, and the two Trainers share words of encouragement, promising to have a great battle regardless of the result. After the announcer makes a brief note of Kaia and Felicia's accomplishments, the match begins on the rock field, and Kaia is selected to choose her first Pokémon. Kaia leads off with Kingler, while Felicia calls on her Rhydon. Kingler charges forward with a super-effective Hammer Arm that sends rocks flying into the air, damaging the Drill Pokémon. Rhydon manages to push through the oncoming rocks and rushes towards Kingler with a Stomp. However, Kaia orders Kingler to grab Rhydon by his horn, which works as Kingler's claw clamps down on his horn, rendering motionless as Rhydon is unable to free himself. Kingler then launches a close-range Hyper Beam with his free claw, easily knocking Rhydon out of the match.
Felicia sends out Ariados as her second Pokémon, so Kaia swaps Kingler out for Octillery. Kaia has Octillery start the battle with Octazooka, but Ariados evades the attack and throws her opponent into the air with a Poison Jab. Octillery uses the increased altitude to its advantage, landing into its own Fire Blast before ramming straight into Ariados. The flames engulf Ariados, dealing massive damage to her. Adding insult to injury, Octillery also adds a point-blank Bubble Beam to the mix to cripple Ariados. Suddenly, Ariados manages to blow the fire away and charges towards Octillery with another Poison Jab, overpowering Octillery's Bubble Beam defense, and knocking it out. Unfazed, Kaia sends out Buizel – the most powerful Pokémon on her team. Ariados starts with a Pin Missile, but Buizel responds with Hydro Pump. However, despite a last-minute evasion tactic behind a rock, Hydro Pump manages to blast through the boulder and knock Ariados out, forcing Felicia to send out Totodile. Buizel uses Headbutt, but Totodile retaliates with Slash, and both attacks clash with each other. Totodile then uses Water Gun, but Buizel counters with Sonic Boom to block the incoming attack. Buizel then goes in for an Aqua Jet, and he tries to hit Totodile, but Totodile jumps atop of the Aqua Jet and rides it like a surfboard. Buizel escapes by using Sonic Boom, dissipating the Aqua Jet, and Felicia recalls Totodile in favor of Meganium, hoping that a Grass-type will provide a good advantage over Buizel. Meganium evades the first Hydro Pump with a Vine Whip-powered jump, but his airborne Razor Leaf is deflected by Sonic Boom. Then, Meganium tries to use Body Slam, but Buizel grabs him by his antennae, and scores a point-blank hit with Hydro Pump, and after a follow-up Sonic Boom, Meganium gets knocked out.
Since Felicia has lost three Pokémon, the referee calls for a five-minute intermission. When the break ends, Felicia sends out Ninetales, while Kaia sends out Tentacruel. Tentacruel uses Rapid Spin to charge straight at Ninetales, who responds with Energy Ball. Tentacruel evades the attack and traps Ninetales with Bind. However, Ninetales frees herself and lands a direct hit with Flamethrower, followed by Dig. Tentacruel struggles to get up, but it faints, and Kaia sends Kingler back out. Felicia warns Ninetales to be careful since Kingler knows Hyper Beam. Using its claws to jump, a tactic copied from Meganium, Kingler manages to land on Ninetales and strike her with Metal Claw. Kingler then blasts a Hyper Beam, but Ninetales ducks and retaliates with Energy Ball, defeating Kingler and tying the match. Kaia sends Poliwrath out next, and after a series of Dynamic Punches, Poliwrath defeats Ninetales with Liquidation. Noticing Poliwrath's speed, Felicia notes that she had selected her entries based on power, and her two remaining Pokémon will subsequently have trouble against Poliwrath. Sending Totodile back out, he easily dodges Poliwrath's Mud Shot, allowing him to try and decrease its speed with Scary Face, which Poliwrath evades. Poliwrath uses Dynamic Punch again, and Felicia tells Totodile to Bite its hand, which works. However, Kaia then orders Poliwrath to use Liquidation, causing its hands to become covered in water, which blasts Totodile from inside out, before he gets knocked out by a follow-up Water Pulse.
Now down to one Pokémon against Kaia's three, Felicia sends out Charizard, something Kaia wasn't anticipating, expressing surprise at Felicia having a Charizard in her team. Poliwrath lunges towards Charizard with Liquidation, but Charizard dodges and attacks with Flamethrower. Poliwrath jumps to avoid the attack, but Charizard flies up and knocks it out by a point-blank Flamethrower to the face. Kaia, undaunted, sends out Pelipper next. Pelipper first uses Wing Attack, which momentarily stuns Charizard. Charizard attempts to use Seismic Toss, but Pelipper's flaps its wings, smacking Charizard repeatedly until he lets go of it. Pelipper then unleashes a Hydro Pump, but Charizard dodges the attack and flies behind Pelipper, before unleashing a vicious Crunch, which knocks out Pelipper. With both Felicia and Kaia down to one Pokémon, Kaia sends out her Buizel. Charizard uses Flamethrower, but it is deflected by Buizel's Sonic Boom. Buizel uses Hydro Pump next and hits Charizard's face. Charizard flies into the air but his airborne attack is repelled by Aqua Jet. As Charizard continues flying through the air and dodging Hydro Pumps, Felicia desperately looks for some way to take advantage, and she suddenly notices that although Charizard's attacks have missed Buizel, the rocks have been left red hot and somewhat melted due to the fire hitting them. She commands Charizard to burn the field instead of attacking Buizel. Although she knows that Felicia had something up her sleeve, Kaia is still nevertheless puzzled by Felicia's tactic. Buizel is immobilized by the red-hot field, something that not even a type advantage could cover. Resorting to cool the field using Hydro Pump, Buizel only succeeds in covering the field in steam. When the steam clears, Buizel and Charizard are locked in close-range combat. Though Buizel manages to duck from a Flamethrower attack, it allows Charizard to attempt a Seismic Toss. Buizel tries to escape by biting Charizard's arm but to no avail. The attack continues and once Charizard and Buizel land on the ground, everyone begins to wonder who won. When the dust clears, Buizel is able to get up, as both Pokémon have a stare-off. Buizel soon succumbs to the damage that it took and faints. Felicia then jumps for joy and thanks Charizard for a spectacular battle. Later that night, Felicia meets Kaia privately by the lake. Reflecting on the battle, Kaia isn't ashamed that she had lost the battle, and says that if anything, she proud to lose to someone like Felicia, and remarks that her unorthodox tactics are something that very few Trainers have, and believes Felicia should feel proud of her ability to think outside the box. Kaia says that she would stay and watch the remainder of the tournament to cheer for Felicia and wishes her luck on her next match. Following the end of the Silver Conference, in which both Felicia and Lei were declared co-winners after their match in the finals ended in a draw, Kaia shared her intentions to travel to the Sevii Islands to hopefully catch some new Water-type Pokémon, and after bidding goodbye to her friends, she departs to accomplish her goal.
Birthday Roadtrip[]
Approximately four years later, Kaia finds herself at Route 4 in Kanto. Felicia calls over to her, and Kaia is pleasantly surprised to see her. After Kaia returns to shore, both girls exchange friendly greetings, and Felicia inquires her about her motives for being underwater. Kaia says she was searching a supposedly powerful Gyarados living nearby, having heard about it from several Trainers who encountered it, and were demolished by its tremendous power. She also states this particular Gyarados is capable of using Flamethrower, a feat quite rare, and she wants to catch it, believing that having a Gyarados that can use Flamethrower will give her a great advantage against Trainers who use Grass-type Pokémon to counter her Water-types. Felicia offers to help her search for it, and Kaia thanks Felicia for offering, accepting her help. As they reach the river, Purrloin freaks out, as Felicia realizes that she detests the water, and she allows Purrloin to stay on shore while she and Kaia go underwater. Despite searching for several minutes, neither one manages to find a Gyarados. They head back out, and Kaia wonders if the tales about Gyarados were lies, and Felicia does remark that a river this small wouldn't even fit a Gyarados. Kaia feels like she got tricked, but Felicia mentions Cerulean Cave, and Kaia inquires her about it. Felicia says that Cerulean Cave has been declared off-limits for any and all Trainers who are not recognized by the Pokémon League as "worthy" of entering due to the many powerful Pokémon located inside. Kaia says that it sounds similar to the out of bounds rule regarding Mt. Silver, and Felicia agrees, although she states that the Pokémon living in Cerulean Cave are nowhere near as strong and dangerous as the ones living at Mt. Silver.
Regardless, Kaia decides to investigate, although Felicia says there's a guard blocking the entrance 24/7, and she doubts he'd give either one of them entry to the caves, but Kaia says she has a plan and tells Felicia to follow her lead. As the reach the entrance to Cerulean Cave, the guard tells them the caves are off-limits and asks if they have permits from the Pokémon Association to go inside, but Kaia admits they don't, therefore the guard denies them entry and tells them to leave. However, Kaia pleads for him to let her go inside, saying there's a particular Pokémon she wants to catch, but the guard denies her request, and becomes more stern in his warning, saying that if Kaia and Felicia don't leave, he'll remove them by force if necessary. Kaia sighs, and says she was hoping things wouldn't have to reach this level, before telling ordering her Pelipper, who had been floating behind the guard the entire time, to use Mist, causing a thick mist to appear, preventing the guard from seeing, and allowing both Felicia and Kaia to sneak inside the caves, with Pelipper following right after. Once inside, Felicia and Kaia begin searching for Gyarados, following the massive lakes inside the caves. Felicia suggests heading to the biggest lake in the cave to find Gyarados, an idea Kaia agrees with. Once they arrive, Kaia puts her head underwater and sees the lake is very deep, and realizes they won't be able to search it completely without help. She brings out Buizel to assist. She provides herself and Felicia underwater breathing devices before they dive in. Kaia holds onto her Buizel while Felicia rides on her Milotic and they begin searching the underwater passages.
As they swim through one of the tunnels, they find a massive cavern, but nothing's inside. Suddenly, they look up and see Gyarados charging at them, but they both dodge the attacks. Gyarados attacks them with Hyper Beam, but both Buizel and Milotic dodge. Felicia tells Kaia they should lead Gyarados somewhere with more space for them to battle, and Kaia decided to take Gyarados back to the surface, and she taunts Gyarados by mocking its attack having missed. Gyarados is enraged and charges at them, as Felicia and Kaia swim away on their Pokémon. They arrive back at the same spot where they dove in and return to land, as Gyarados emerges from the water, and Kaia decides to battle it. Felicia says Gyarados seems quite strong, and Kaia should use every Pokémon she has, but Kaia comments she only has Buizel and Pelipper with her, having left her other Pokémon with Rosita in New Bark Town. Hearing this, Felicia decides to help and after telling Milotic to join the battle, she also brings out Empoleon and Totodile to help in the battle. Kaia tells Buizel to use Ice Punch, but Gyarados's Hydro Pump sends him reeling back, but Empoleon manages to score a direct hit with Drill Peck. Gyarados quickly counters with Twister, and all five Pokémon are engulfed by the attack. Once they recover, Buizel attacks with Swift, while Totodile and Pelipper use Double-Edge and Wing Attack, respectively, and while those hit Gyarados, it manages to recover quickly and use Flamethrower to send Totodile and Pelipper crashing back at their feet. Kaia realizes the rumors regarding Gyarados's usage of Flamethrower are true and she's even more determined to catch it. Kaia tells Buizel to use Hydro Pump, with Felicia telling Milotic and Empoleon to do the same, and all three attacks land on Gyarados, finally causing a measure of damage, although minimal. Kaia tells Felicia to have all the Pokémon attack together, and they quickly get into a battle formation: Felicia tells Milotic, Totodile, and Empoleon to use Dragon Pulse, Water Gun, and Steel Beam, respectively, while Kaia tells Buizel and Pelipper to use Sonic Boom and Hydro Pump, respectively. All five attacks hit Gyarados, who stumbles, and Kaia throws a Poké Ball at it, but Gyarados manages to break free, before unleashing a massive Hyper Beam that knocks Totodile, Empoleon, and Pelipper out of the battle, leaving only Milotic and Buizel able to continue. After recalling their fainted Pokémon, Felicia and Kaia order Milotic and Buizel to use a combined Hydro Pump, but Gyarados manages to dodge. As Gyarados is focused on them, Purrloin sneaks close and uses Attract, making Gyarados enamored with her. Felicia commends Purrloin on using Attract to make Gyarados defenseless, and proceeds to tell Milotic to use Disarming Voice while Kaia tells Buizel to use Swift, both attacks landing. With Gyarados still standing, Felicia tells Kaia to use another barrage of attacks, ordering her Milotic to use Hyper Beam, and Buizel uses a follow-up Ice Punch, making Gyarados fall down. This time, Kaia uses a Dive Ball and successfully catches the Gyarados. Buizel retrieves the Dive Ball from the water, and she celebrates her catch. Once they leave the Cerulean Cave, Felicia and Kaia are confronted by not only the guard, but also Helena Rhodes, the President of the Pokémon League, and Chairwoman of the Pokémon Association's Johto branch.
Helena scolds both Felicia and Kaia on their complete disregard of the rules regarding entry to the Cerulean Cave, and most importantly, disregarding their own safety by entering the cave without permission, saying they could've been seriously hurt, or even killed by the Pokémon living there. Helena also says she was disappointed in Felicia's actions, especially after everything she'd gone through, only to put herself in danger like this, but Kaia cuts her off, taking full responsibility, saying that she persuaded Felicia to help her catch Gyarados, and pleads Helena to punish only her, and not Felicia. Helena sighs, and says that while she admired Kaia's loyalty to Felicia, she nonetheless can't just pretend nothing has happened, and says that while Kaia is already of age, and doesn't answer to nobody but herself, Helena says that she'll inform Felicia's parents of what she's done, saying they deserve to know, and Felicia is terrified, afraid of what punishment awaits for her at home. She also says she'll escort Felicia herself back to Pallet Town, remarking that her "roadtrip" has ended prematurely due to her own actions. Kaia apologizes to Felicia for dragging her into this, but Felicia says she shouldn't have to apologize, remarking that nobody forced her to help. Felicia also invites Kaia to her birthday party in one week at Pallet Town. Kaia accepts the invite and promises to make it up to her before leaving.
A week later, Kaia attends Felicia's 16th birthday party as she promised, and gifts Felicia a Pokémon Egg as an apology of sorts for getting her into trouble. She questions whether the Egg will hatch into a Water-type Pokémon, but Kaia laughs and says she wouldn't force her preferred typing onto someone else. Kaia says she got the Egg from a friend who works at a Pokémon Day Care and knows that Felicia will take good care of it.
Aftermath[]
Several months later, Kaia meets up with Felicia at a rocky seashore on Route 25, stopping Felicia from catching a Clauncher she gained an interest in. Kaia explains that she's encountered this same Clauncher several times before and believes that fate has led them together. With Felicia still determined to catch it, Kaia declares they'll settle this with a fishing battle and whips out her rod. Felicia agrees to this and responds in kind. The fishing battle begins, with the first one to reel Clauncher in getting the first chance at trying to catch it. When Kaia finally gets a bite and reels Clauncher out of the water, Clauncher manages to pull Kaia into the water, causing Felicia to laugh at her until she gets a bite as well. However, like Kaia, she gets pulled back by Clauncher instead of the other way around and falls into the water as well, and Kaia stares at Felicia with a smug look on her face. Clauncher starts saying something, and Felicia eventually deduces that Clauncher wants her and Kaia to battle in order to decide which of them gets to catch him, which Clauncher confirms with a nod. Kaia happily accepts this, and they agree to a one-on-one battle. Kaia decides to choose Gyarados se, realizing that Ninetales, Pyroar, and Talonflame aren't a good choice due to being Fire-types, and Quilladin not being strong enough to handle Gyarados's might, and despite Gyarados being part Flying-type and Aurorus's Rock-type attacks being super-effective, she nonetheless has a high risk due to being a Rock-type Pokémon against Gyarados's Water-type attacks. Therefore, Felicia decides to battle with Florges.
The battle finally starts, and Florges makes the first move with Vine Whip, but Gyarados dodges by diving into the water and subsequently using Flamethrower, which lands a hit on Florges. Gyarados next attacks with Thunderbolt, but Florges uses Moonblast to block it from hitting before using Petal Blizzard. Kaia has Gyarados dodge it and counterattack with Hyper Beam, which Felicia counters by ordering a Vine Whip. Using Vine Whip, Florges propels herself above the attack, as well as Gyarados, knocking Gyarados to the ground with a follow-up Hidden Power. Then, Felicia orders a Vine Whip for the finish, but Gyarados manages to unleash an Aqua Tail that clashes with Vine Whip and easily overpowers it, sending Florges high up in the air. As she falls back down, Kaia orders a finishing Flamethrower that lands a direct hit and Florges is unable to dodge while mid-air, resulting in her defeat and Kaia's victory. Felicia comforts Florges, who cries inconsolably after her loss, believing she has let her Trainer down, but Felicia assures Florges she's proud of her performance and Florges could never disappoint her, and Florges hugs her Trainer in response. Kaia claims her prize by catching Clauncher. She celebrates with Gyarados for a moment before Felicia asks what her plans are. Kaia says she's planning to travel to Viridian City before taking a shortcut straight for Johto. Felicia says she's heading that way to reach Pallet Town and they agree to travel together until then. With this, the two set off together to head towards Viridian City.
After crossing Mt. Moon, Kaia and Felicia are nearly arriving in Pewter City. While walking through Route 3, an angry Caterpie suddenly pops out from the bushes, as well as a young girl who accuses Kaia and Felicia of being thieves, so she has Caterpie tie them up with a String Shot. Despite Kaia and Felicia's protests, Caterpie continuess to encase them in String Shot. Then, a man in a labcoat flies onto the scene, and uses his telepathic machine to predict their intentions. From the readings, the man predicts that Kaia and Felicia have a limousine waiting for them. However, Felicia sarcastically says his invention is a failure as neither herself nor Kaia can even afford a limousine's wheel, let alone the whole vehicle. Eventually, Kaia and Felicia convince them that they are just travelers. The two strangers apologize and introduce themselves as Dr. Warner and Darcie. At Warner's laboratory in Pewter City, Darcie apologizes for accosting them and Felicia compliment's Darcie's Caterpie for its strong String Shot. Darcie replies that Caterpie is her first Pokémon and she plans to go on a journey with it soon. Dr. Warner raises a strange contraption from a nearby pool of water. It rises to the top and opens up, revealing an array of inventions based on different Pokémon's abilities, according to the doctor. He grabs one device, a microphone with a Jigglypuff figurine on top of it, and starts singing into it. The device causes Dr. Warner to fall fast asleep from the soothing melody. Outside, a man spies on the lab with his binoculars. He concludes that Warner's inventions could definitely help him and decides to spring into action. He enters the lab and begins his heist, but Caterpie notices him rummaging, followed by Dr. Warner and the others. Kaia recognizes the thief as Isaiah, a notorious burglar. She explains she's seen wanted posters of him back in Johto, and Isaiah is flattered that his reputation has spread to other regions. Caterpie heads into battle as Isaiah calls upon his Granbull. When Isaiah picks up an orange case, Dr. Warner becomes very concerned about the invention inside. Caterpie snatches the case with its String Shot, but Granbull grabs hold of it with its fangs, severing the strand. Kaia's Buizel delivers a swift Quick Attack into Granbull, causing the case to fall to the ground and open, revealing several small, blue balls. Dr. Warner yells as Caterpie eats one of the balls. A reddish light appears around its body before Caterpie suddenly grows to enormous proportions, reaching the lab ceiling. Caterpie sends Isaiah and Granbull packing with a massive Tackle attack and leaving the stolen objects behind. Kaia figures that the blue balls are the extremely difficult to find Rare Candies but Dr. Warner says that its his "Rare Candy Complete." The balls are meant to be a multivitamin to maximize a Pokémon's potential, but Dr. Warner had no idea that this is what would happen. The mysterious light appears again as Caterpie begins to increase in size, this time breaking through the ceiling. Felicia tells Darcie to return Caterpie to its Poké Ball, but she reveals that she never actually caught Caterpie.
Caterpie causes chaos across Pewter City, stampeding through and breaking right through a small bridge. Dr. Warner dons one of his inventions, a Machoke suit that increases one's strength by a factor of ten, and pulls a wagon containing the others. Caterpie arrives at a huge tower in the city and starts to climb it. About halfway up, the top half of the tower fails due to Caterpie's weight and falls on top of the city below. Suddenly, Caterpie gives off brilliant white light and evolves into Metapod, but remains perched atop the broken tower. Officer Jenny rushes onto the scene and Dr. Warner explains that this mess is his fault, much to Jenny's dismay as she remarks that its not the first time Warner's inventions have caused trouble, recalling that he was previously kicked out of the Pewter Museum of Science because of his inventions always creating chaos. Elsewhere, Isaiah is upset over having lost the Rare Candy earlier, but Granbull reveals that it grabbed three of them before they were blasted out of the lab. Isaiah then springs into motion and seizes Dr. Warner. Felicia brings out Pyroar and orders him to use Flamethrower, but Granbull's Dazzling Gleam blocks it from hitting. Then, Kaia's Buizel manages hit Granbull with a successful Sonic Boom. Then, Isaiah sends out his Dustox and throws the three candies towards it, but one falls short and lands in Granbull's mouth. They both grow to about the same size as Metapod, to the surprise of everyone else. Isaiah tries to tell Granbull a command, but he realizes that it would cause too much damage in the city, so much so that Isaiah himself would get caught in it, and decides to recall Granbull back to its Poké Ball. He then flees aboard Dustox with Dr. Warner in his possession. From atop the wrecked tower, Metapod's body begins to glow as it appears as it evolves into Butterfree. With their own winged gargantuan, Darcie, Felicia, and Kaia hop aboard Butterfree and give chase to Isaiah. As they close in, Isaiah orders Dustox to use Poison Sting, which Butterfree dodges. Kaia's Buizel launches a Hydro Pump at Dustox but misses. Kaia notices steel electrical towers ahead of Dustox and directs Buizel to use Sonic Boom on them, causing Dustox to narrowly avoid the power lines by diving recklessly. Darcie tells Butterfree to use Supersonic, confusing Dustox and everyone aboard. The mysterious light appears around Dustox again as it quickly returns to normal size. This leaves Isaiah and Dr. Warner helplessly plummeting towards the ground. Isaiah falls into a lake below, but Butterfree saves Dr. Warner from the fall.
Isaiah starts wading to the shoreline, just as Officer Jenny arrives, who orders him under arrest. Isaiah orders Dustox use Psybeam on them, but Butterfree appears uses Whirlwind to block the attack, and with Butterfree still being gigantic, the attack creates an extremely powerful gust of wind, causing the Psybeam to dissipate in thin air. As Butterfree glares at it, Isaiah surrenders in fear of the giant Bug-type Pokémon, and Jenny places him in handcuffs. Officer Jenny orders Dr. Warner to lock the Rare Candies away, and he replies that they were an accidental invention. At that, Jenny says that if she ever catches another one of Warner's inventions causing trouble again, she'll have a jail cell prepared especially for him, and Warner recoils in fear. After Jenny leaves, Butterfree returns to its normal size and Darcie says that she's glad Butterfree is back to normal and is excited to go on a journey with it someday. Felicia and Kaia then bid Darcie and Dr. Warner goodbye as they leave to continue on their journey.
Character[]
A mature and wise individual, Kaia holds great understandings of both people and Pokémon, and displays a very altruistic and benign personality, as Kaia defended Felicia from August's bullying antics and offered to travel together with her to the site of the Whirl Cup for no reason other than to build up their friendship. She also helped train Felicia for her upcoming rematch against the Cianwood City Gym Leader CJ, giving her advice and while being firm about Felicia's shortcomings regarding her strategy, she nevertheless remained kind and reasonable, explaining Felicia's mistakes and how to overcome them. While Kaia never displays arrogance or conceit, she has no use for false modesty either. If a situation warranted it, Kaia is perfectly willing to acknowledge her skills as a Pokémon Trainer to intimidate others into standing down should they cross a line or hurt others. Aside from her kindness, Kaia is a very competitive Trainer, and even when suffering a defeat, she takes it with great pride and honor, thanking her opponents for an amazing battle and hoping to learn from her own mistakes in order to become stronger. At the same time, Kaia isn't above taking risks or even breaking the law, as she snuck inside the Cerulean Cave, which is considered out of bounds for anyone without legal authorization, in order to catch an infamous and powerful Gyarados, even dragging Felicia with her, and after they were both caught and reprimanded for breaking the law, Kaia felt very guilty for getting Felicia into trouble, and later repayed her by gifting her an Egg as both an apology gift, as well as a birthday gift.
Kaia holds a strong love for Water-type Pokémon, with her ultimate goal being recognized as one of the world's greatest Water-type Pokémon Trainers. While she doesn't believe in type superiority, Kaia does believe that Water-type Pokémon have great potential, if not untapped, and even when faced off against Pokémon whom her Water-types are at a disadvantage, Kaia enlists the usage of several different moves in her team to help her deal with any situation, making her an incredibly tough Trainer to beat even with type advantages over her Pokémon. Even when not using her vast array of different attacks scattered across her team, Kaia's Pokémon are strong enough to battle even with their natural type-based moves, with both the Alola League and Indigo League Champions Dwayne and Jade, respectively, recognizing her skills and warning their daughter Felicia about remaining focused during their battle at all times as Kaia could turn the battle's tide in the blink of an eye if she wasn't careful.
Someone who is prepared for almost anything, Kaia carries several different kinds of medicine with her at all times, sharing her opinion that all Trainers should expect any kind of situation during their travels regardless if they weren't likely to experience it. She also carries a variety of different items to deal with wild Pokémon and knows how to effectively use them to deal with situations that would otherwise result in violence, as Kaia was wise enough to use a Soothe Bell to calm down an angry group of Grimer and Muk that were attacking because of Felicia's Totodile having eaten their food without permission. An adventurer at heart, Kaia isn't someone who tends to stay in one place for too long, and openly admits that she hasn't been back to her hometown in many years, only briefly passing by while challenging for the Johto League, and admits she doesn't even remember how much the city had changed while she was away, unable to determine what was new and what already existed there prior to her departure.
