History[]
Journeys in Johto[]
On March 25th 1997, Maggie receives her first partner Pokémon from Professor Elm, a Chikorita and promptly embarks on her journey. Just a few hours later, on Route 29, Maggie and her Chikorita engage in some training before coming across a wild Sentret, which they decide to battle against in hopes of catching it. Chikorita's first Tackle misses its target, and Sentret retaliates with Swift, which sends Chikorita rolling back. It quickly bounces back with Razor Leaf which knocks out Sentret. The young Trainer sees her opportunity and immediately catches it with a Poké Ball. She celebrates her latest catch with a rendition of the Team Electabuzz baseball theme. Afterward, she calls back her Chikorita, spots Chase watching her, and becomes flustered, falling flat on her back. Chase asks if she's alright, and Maggie asks why he's watching her, calling him a pervert. Chase's face becomes beet red and he apologizes, saying that he came across her battle and was simply curious as to whether she could catch the Sentret or not. However, Maggie laughs and says she's only joking, much to his relief. Maggie and Chase quickly get acquainted and she reveals that she has an affinity for yellow-striped Pokémon and wants to catch an Electabuzz. She also reveals that she is a huge Team Electabuzz fan, but Chase thinks they'll get defeated by Team Magikarp or Team Starmie. Maggie believes the members of the Electabuzz Team are good players and will beat anyone, though Chase thinks they couldn't beat an egg and sassily remarks he's seen better swings on a playground. Maggie is very angered at this statement, and decides to settle their dispute with a Pokémon battle. Chase objects, stating that he has far more training experience and Maggie is only a beginner. She blows him off, calling him the one that does not know anything about Pokémon nor baseball, angering Chase, who then accepts the challenge. Maggie says they can each use two Pokémon, though Chase is confident he'll only need one.
Maggie starts the battle with the Sentret she'd just caught. She commands Sentret to use Quick Attack against Chase's Charmeleon, but the Pokémon just bounces off Charmeleon's stomach and is knocked out by a single Scratch attack. Becoming infuriated with how the battle is ending up, Maggie sends out Chikorita and tells it to use Vine Whip on Charmeleon. Chase simply has him use Flamethrower on Chikorita, causing the Grass-type's head leaf to catch fire, and Chikorita starts running around in circles, then collapses, ending the battle. Maggie is depressed and calls Chikorita back as Chase offers to shake hands, but she runs away, her pride broken. In the middle of fleeing, Maggie trips and falls to the ground. With this, Maggie recalls her family's tradition of cheering on the Electabuzz, because even though they haven't won any of their games, they never gave up. With that in mind, she gets back up and tells herself that she will be just like Team Electabuzz. She promptly returns to Chase's location and challenges him to a rematch, this time one-on-one, and he accepts. The stage is set in a baseball diamond and Maggie starts the battle with Chikorita, while Chase uses Cleffa. Maggie demands him use Charmeleon again, but Chase protests by saying that Charmeleon has much more experience and it won't be a fair fight, and says that Cleffa has little battle experience, while also taking the opportunity to use the battle to help the Star Shape Pokémon grow stronger. Maggie begins the battle by telling Chikorita to use Sweet Scent. The attack immediately leaves Cleffa a little dazed by the smell, and Chikorita then lands a Tackle attack on her. Cleffa then uses a Pound attack that sends Chikorita reeling. Both Pokémon continue to trade attacks. As both Pokémon are exhausted, Chase realizes the next attack will most likely decide the result, and tells Cleffa to use Pound while Maggie orders Chikorita to use Tackle. At the very last second, Chase tells Cleffa to switch over to Draining Kiss, and once the two make contact, Cleffa's Draining Kiss drains Chikorita's remaining energy, resulting in Maggie's defeat. With the battle over, Cleffa and Chikorita congratulate each other while Chase and Maggie share a high-five. She then apologizes to Chase for her earlier behavior, but Chase says she's got nothing to apologize for as she's still a novice and losing is just another step towards becoming a great Trainer, admitting he's gone through the same. Later, Chase and Maggie reach a crossroads and they decide to head their separate ways, promising to battle again once they when they meet again.
On April 19th, Maggie travels to the National Park in order to compete in the annual Bug-Catching Contest, where she meets up with Chase again, and also ends up meeting one his friends and rivals, Selina Parker. Maggie tells him that she is entering the contest as well, and that she intends to beat him no matter what the cost to make up for her loss to him the first time they met. The competitors are informed of the rules and each receives a Sport Ball. A crowd watches the contest unfold on a screen in an amphitheater. Chase quickly spots a Ledian. He orders Cyndaquil to attack it, but before he can engage it, Maggie appears and attacks it with her Chikorita. She easily catches it and continues on her way, ignoring Chase's protest that he saw it first. Maggie orders Chikorita to start attacking trees and manages to knock some wild Pineco out of their hiding spots. After a short battle, Chikorita manages to defeat them and the two continue on their way. Soon, Maggie notices Chikorita lagging behind, still tired from her previous battles. Still wanting to win, she tells Chikorita not to give up, and the pair continues their hunt. They soon encounter a Scyther. Despite Chikorita's obvious exhaustion, Maggie orders her to attack and the tired Pokémon soon finds herself in a battle she can't win. At the last moment, Chase appears with Cyndaquil and saves Chikorita. He yells at Maggie for being an irresponsible Trainer then lures the Scyther away so that she and Chikorita can rest. Not wanting to listen to him, Maggie tries to encourage Chikorita, only to realize that she has run away. Chikorita hides in a bush and tries to rest, and Maggie stumbles upon her a moment later. She calls Chikorita over to her but is surprised to find that Chikorita refuses to listen to her. Maggie then realizes Chikorita is refusing to obey because she'd ignored her feelings, and made her fight until she collapsed. Realizing her mistake, Maggie tearfully apologizes to Chikorita, who joyfully jumps into her arms. Later, Maggie and Chikorita become trapped within a large forest fire, caused by a participant's Charmeleon using Flamethrower recklessly. Chase and Cyndaquil attempt to save them, but some trees are falling, and block his path. Maggie sees a falling, flaming, branch, and grabs Chikorita and jumps out of the way, although her leg gets burned as she wasn't able to move away in time. Seeing this, Chikorita frantically tries to help her Trainer, but Maggie's burns prove too much for her to handle and she can't walk properly because of the pain. As Cyndaquil struggles with the fire, Maggie's Chikorita suddenly evolves into Bayleef and uses Body Slam to whip up some sand and dust to put out the fire, and Maggie marvels at seeing Bayleef saving her. While Bayleef deals with the fire, Chase and Cyndaquil decide to focus on saving the Bug-type Pokémon, and they successfully manage to rescue a group of Caterpie, Pineco, Venonat, Ledyba, and Spinarak from the fire, and Bayleef successfully manages to take Maggie away from the fire, just as the Bug-Catching Contest's officials come with several Water-type Pokémon to put out the fire. The Contest comes to an end shortly thereafter, and with his capture of Beedrill, Chase wins the Contest, and also the option to select between three prizes: a Sun Stone, a Metal Coat, and a Moon Stone. Chase chooses the Moon Stone in hopes of using it to evolve his Clefairy eventually. Meanwhile, Maggie pouts as she's finished in last place. In the aftermath, Chase decides to give his Beedrill away to Maggie as thanks for her help in stopping the forest fire and because of her obsession with black and yellow-striped Pokémon. Maggie tearfully accepts his gift and happily sings the Electabuzz Fight song to Chase and Selina before parting ways with them.
Approximately two months later, Maggie comes across Chase once again while she's searching for a wild Elekid near Mt. Silver, and upon discovering that Chase's Larvitar had separated from him and is with Elekid, both Trainers agree to find Elekid together, but Maggie professes the fact that she wants to catch Elekid, and Chase promises to not steal her catch. The duo over Larvitar's Screeching and rush to his location, where they find both Larvitar and Elekid captured by Gerald Gates and his henchmen. However, Maggie enlists her Meganium's help in slice the net with Razor Leaf, freeing both Pokémon and they successfully fend off the gang of Pokémon poachers. After reuniting with Elekid and Larvitar, Maggie battles Elekid with her Meganium. Elekid uses its Thunder Punch attack to fend off Meganium's Razor Leaf attack. Meganium then Tackles Elekid before landing a direct Solar Beam on it. Elekid falls backwards and Maggie pitches a Poké Ball at her target. Elekid enters the Ball, and after a few sways, Elekid is officially caught. As Maggie holds up her newly caught Pokémon, Larvitar is feeling sad, but Maggie assures it that she will look after Elekid, which instantly cheers up the young Pokémon. Later, Maggie declares that her new Elekid will help her earn more Badges, saying she's currently has five, and Chase shows off his complete set. Happy for her friend's success, Maggie sends him on his way with the theme song she uses to cheer on her favorite baseball team, the Electabuzz. However, the spirited gesture leaves Chase somewhat overwhelmed. Once the Silver Conference finally begins, Maggie manages to qualify and successfully advances through the screening round, and she gets placed in a group of three in a round-robin tournament, where each Trainer battles the two others — with three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. The Trainer with the most points in the group stage will move on to the Victory Tournament, with Maggie being grouped with Chase and Jackson Weathers. The first battle of the group is between Maggie and Chase, with each side able to use three Pokémon. At the B-Stadium, the match begins, with Maggie having the first move. She brings out her Beedrill while Chase chooses Chinchou. The battle begins with an exchange of Pin Missile and Water Gun. Maggie changes tact and tells Beedrill to use Double Team to evade Chinchou's attacks. It works for a moment, and Beedrill hits Chinchou with a Poison Sting. Maggie orders another use of Double Team, but Chinchou manages to hit him with a Water Gun. At this point, Maggie recalls Beedrill in exchange for Elekid. Anticipating this, Chase pulls out Chinchou for Forretress, knowing that Electric-type attacks don't do well against Steel-types, and it pays off when Forretress shakes off a Thunderbolt. With Elekid perfectly countered, Maggie recalls him and sends Beedrill back out. Chase leaves Forretress in, and uses Tackle and Rapid Spin in quick succession. Beedrill retaliates with another Pin Missile, but Forretress blocks with Iron Defense. Forretress also blocks Beedrill's Fury Attack, and uses another Tackle on the recovery. One Rapid Spin later, and Beedrill is out for the count.
Next, Meganium is sent out, Forretress starts off with Rapid Spin; however, it is countered by Meganium's Vine Whip, who grabs hold Forretress as he spins foward and lifts him up in the air. Forretress freefalls into the ground, causing a small crater upon impact, and is then knocked out by a powerful Body Slam that only increases the size of the crater. Chase calls on Chinchou once again, while Maggie selects her Elekid for the upper hand. Chinchou begins with a Water Gun, but Elekid cuts the attack's power in half with Light Screen. Chinchou tries to charge at Elekid with Spark, but the Electric Pokémon strikes him with a Thunder Punch, knocking him out. Down to his last Pokémon, Chase brings out his Blastoise. As Maggie prepares to strike Blastoise out with a Thunderbolt, Blastoise hits his mark with a Hydro Pump. Maggie is left startled for a moment, though she soon goes on the attack. Blastoise evades a series of Thunder Punches and hits again with a Hydro Pump, which Elekid blocks with Thunderbolt. A second Thunderbolt attack hits Blastoise, and Maggie tries to finish him off with a Thunder Punch. However, Blastoise, while falling towards the ground, uses Rapid Spin to hold himself in place and as Elekid comes down with Thunder Punch, he hits Blastoise's spinning shell, which causes his arm to bounce right back and hit his own face in the process, sending him flying, and giving Blastoise the opportunity to finish him off with Skull Bash. The match is now down to Meganium and Blastoise, with momentum back on Chase's side. Blastoise opens with a Hydro Pump, which Meganium counters with Razor Leaf and Body Slam. Blastoise responds to the Body Slam with Rapid Spin. The attacks collide, which sends both Pokémon rolling back as Meganium's weight was just too much for Blastoise to handle unscathed. Another Hydro Pump attack is met with a Razor Leaf, which sends Blastoise reeling, with Blastoise ending up on his back. As Blastoise struggles to get back up, Meganium sees an opening and rushes in for a Body Slam. In a last-minute move, Blastoise retreats into his shell and uses Hydro Pump, aiming the cannons to the ground to propel himself upward and towards the freefalling Meganium. While mid-air, Blastoise attacks Meganium with a powerful Skull Bash that sends her crashing into the wall behind Maggie, knocking her out and giving Chase the hard-fought win. Maggie walks over to Chase and congratulates him on the victory. Chase replies that the match helped him and Blastoise to reunite.
After the match, the receptionist at the Pokémon Center tells Chase that he now has firm control of Group H with the win. Depending on the outcome of the second match, Chase could be in a situation in which he only needs a draw to advance. During the second match of Group H in the Silver Conference, Maggie faces off against Jackson and alhough Maggie is ready, Jackson is more prepared to showboat than battle, saying hello to Samantha to one of the stadium cameras. The three-on-three match gets well underway, with Maggie choosing her Furret to face off against Jackson's Corsola. The battle quickly goes to Maggie's favor as Furret manages to knock down Corsola with Iron Tail. Corsola retaliates with Water Gun, but Furret Digs underground to dodge before resurfacing and knocking out Corsola with Swift. Jackson recalls Corsola and brings out his Sudowoodo, who quickly goes into the offensive with Double-Edge, but Furret manages to dodge before Maggie promptly recalls it in favor of Slowking. She quickly calls for Slowking's Water Pulse, but Sudowoodo bats the attack away with Hammer Arm before using Wood Hammer, scoring a super-effective hit against Slowking, which surprises Maggie as she wasn't expecting Sudowoodo to use a Grass-type move. Jackson then calls for Sudowoodo to use Stone Edge and Slowking counters with Surf, but the Stone Edge cuts right through the Surf and lands a direct hit on Slowking, knocking it out and evening out the odds. Maggie recalls Slowking and thanks it for the effort. She then sends out her Meganium, who immediately attacks with Razor Leaf, but Sudowoodo's Stone Edge blocks it. Then, Jackson calls for Sudowoodo to use Hammer Arm, and Maggie calls for Meganium to use Vine Whip, and both attacks end up hitting the other at the same time, resulting in a double knockout. With the battle now being a winner-takes-all affair, Maggie and Jackson bring out Furret and Tentacruel. As the battle rages on, Jackson's showboating gets the better of him, as he trips over his cape issuing orders to Tentacruel, leaving it standing as it takes a Swift attack from Furret. With Jackson struggling to get up as he keeps tripping up on his cape, Maggie finishes the battle by having Furret knock out Tentacruel with a combination of Iron Tail and Dig. As a result, Maggie and Chase are tied at the top of Group H, and the latter will only need a tie against Jackson in order to advance, while Jackson must win outright to force a three-way tie. Furthermore, a second tiebreaker round-robin would be needed should Jackson win outright. Ultimately, Chase and Jackson's battle ends in a draw, resulting in Chase officially advancing to the victory round from Group H, while Maggie and Jackson are both eliminated, but she doesn't seem too upset, instead cheering Chase on, believing that he can go all the way.
One Year Later[]
A year later, on August 10th 1998, Maggie travels to Cerulean City in the Kanto region to attend the baseball game between the Electabuzz and the Magikarp teams, but laments as she hasn't gotten tickets yet. She then decides to head to the Cerulean Gym, where she meets up with Chase again, as well as meeting Mariana and Leroy Ambrose for the first time. After explaining her motives for being in town, Maggie watches as a Wingull flies in through the window, and per Chase's inquiry, Leroy reveals it's a Pokémon native to Hoenn. It drops a letter out of its mouth, which Chase catches, and sees that it's for Misty, and the Wingull flies away just as quickly as it came. Leroy takes the letter and says that since Misty isn't around, all mail is required to through him first. He opens and reads the letter, which is from a girl named Kate Tucker and instructs Misty to meet her at the lighthouse. No one is sure who Kate is, though Chase suggests she might be a friend of Misty's they don't know about, while Maggie says that it could be someone wanting revenge for a lost battle. Leroy isn't sure what to do, and Chase suggests they all head out to the lighthouse and meet Kate to see what she wants. Leroy agrees and after locking the Gym's doors, they all head to the lighthouse. Now waiting at the lighthouse, Leroy is feeling jumpy, assuming the worst, but Maggie promises that she won't let anything bad happen. A tough-looking sailor appears but before Maggie can do anything he walks right past them, and Chase reminds her that the person who sent the letter is a girl, and Maggie sheepishly admits having forgotten. Just then, a girl greets them and Chase correctly deduces she's Kate, to which she confirms. Before Kate can say anything else, Maggie jumps forward to ask her a barrage of questions. Kate looks around for Misty and comments on her absence, and Leroy says she's currently unavailable, and Kate inquires on the motives. While Leroy tries to avoid the subject, Chase says that Misty is currently on a date with a boy, much to Kate's dejection. Much to their surprise, Kate admits she wanted to invite Misty out on a date, leading to Maggie cursing herself for not thinking about such a possibility, wanting to have been right on her assumptions. Kate continues and says she has some VIP tickets for the Electabuzz-Magikarp baseball game, and this makes Maggie instantly perk up, but before she can say anything, Chase steps foward to shoot his shot, saying that she can go out with him instead, but Kate promptly shoots him down, remarking she's only interested in girls, much to Chase's disappointment, and Mariana sighs at his growing interest in girls recently. Maggie then steps foward and says she's a diehard fan of the Electabuzz baseball team and asks if she can have one of the tickets, but Kate refuses, saying she wants Misty to go out with her. Maggie then notes how Kate seems to be around their age, and Kate confirms having just turned thirteen five days ago. Maggie then remarks that Misty is an adult and she'd never go out on a date with a minor, but Kate foolishly says that she can't change her feelings and foolishly remarks that "love has no limits", and Chase suddenly feels relieved over the fact Kate rejected him, believing her to be absurdly stupid. Since she's rejected her proposal, Maggie instead offers a battle; if she wins, she'll get one of Kate's tickets. Kate accepts, but says that if she wins, they'll take her to Misty so she can formally invite her out. Despite the odd request, Maggie accepts, vowing to win her so-desired ticket for the game.
The two take their proper places around the lighthouse as Leroy acts as the referee, saying that each Trainer can use only one Pokémon. Since she wants tickets for the Electabuzz game, Maggie finds it appropriate to select Elekid. In response, Kate sends out her Delcatty, and Chase immediately scans it with his Pokédex, and Leroy says that Delcatty is yet another Pokémon native to Hoenn. Chase can't help but comment on the recent number of Hoenn Pokémon he's been seeing on the same day and wonders if it's a sign he should travel to Hoenn. Kate remarks her family is originally from Lilycove City before moving to Cerulean City five years ago, but quickly refocuses on the battle, telling Chase to stop distracting her, much to his chagrin as he only inquired about her Pokémon, not her backstory. Maggie calls for a Thunder Punch, but Delcatty quickly uses Fake Out, which hits and causes Elekid to flinch, leaving him unable to perform the move. Then, Kate calls for Delcatty to use Fury Swipes, but Elekid jumps to dodge before using a Thunderbolt attack. Delcatty is zapped by the move and gets paralyzed, but Delcatty immediately uses Heal Bell to cure its paralysis. Then, Elekid comes down with a Quick Attack, scoring a direct hit that sends Delcatty reeling. Maggie then calls for another Thunder Punch, but Elekid doesn't respond, standing still. As Maggie calls for an attack, Elekid still doesn't respond and she wonders what's going on. Leroy tells her to take a close eye on her Pokémon, and when Maggie shifts her head to look at Elekid from the side, she notices he's completely infatuated with Delcatty, which leaves her completely confused, as well as both Chase and Mariana. Leroy says this is most likely the effects of Delcatty's Cute Charm Ability, explaining that when a Pokémon with this Ability is hit by a move that makes contact from a Pokémon of the opposite gender, there is a chance that the attacking Pokémon will become infatuated. Since Elekid is a male, Leroy also deduces that Delcatty is female, to which Kate confirms. With Elekid unable to attack, Kate calls for Delcatty's Covet attack, which lands straight on Elekid's face. The Electric Pokémon holds his ground for a moment but then collapses, and Leroy makes the call and declares Kate as the winner. A dejected Maggie recalls Elekid, but is surprised once Kate offers her the ticket anyway, saying she can respect a good battle and can see when someone is determined to accomplish something. Furthermore, Kate admits having grown interested in her outgoing and fiery nature and says that if she can't go on a date with Misty, then Maggie is her second best choice. While somewhat miffed at the prospect of being someone's "second choice", Maggie brushes these feelings aside merely for the ability to attend the game. Maggie also checks that dinner is included in the price of the ticket, and Kate assures her that it is all taken care of, and says they'll have a wonderful time. While somewhat uncomfortable, not really being interested in girls, Maggie says she'll push through it by focusing on the Electabuzz, and they make their way to the stadium to watch the game, with Chase expressing his "condolences" to Maggie for being forced to endure Kate's shenanigans for a few more hours.
Character[]
Maggie is an energetic young woman with a fighting spirit as bright and strong as the sun. Despite being a novice Trainer at the time, she felt confident enough to take on Chase Logan in a battle despite the latter being hesitant due to their experience gap, with Maggie refusing to let him walk away without a battle. Suffering her first defeat in such a one-sided manner, Maggie's spirit was briefly shattered, but after recalling her family's faith in her and how they never give up, she bounced back and returned to her usual self. Even after losing against Chase in a rematch, Maggie remained cheerful and vowed to only become stronger to defeat him someday. Throughout the course of 1997, Maggie evolved from a novice Trainer who won battles through sheer luck, to an experienced one who proved quite difficult to defeat thanks to her quick-thinking strategies and variety of Pokémon. Maggie can also allow her emotions to cloud her judgement, seen as when she was pushing her Chikorita to keep up with her whilst chasing a Scyther during the Bug-Catching Contest, unaware of how much pressure she was putting on Chikorita, and after being called out and scolded by Chase for doing so, Maggie broke down in genuine tears, apologizing to Chikorita, who immediately forgave her.
She is an extreme fan of the Electabuzz baseball team, so much so that she's somewhat obsessed with yellow-colored Pokémon, complete with black stripes. One of her personal goals was to capture an Elekid to represent her love for the team in which the evolutionary line is named after, expressing great determination in not allowing a wild Elekid she found escape, even angrily warning Chase not not even try and steal her capture. Her love for the Electabuzz team also pushes her to endure uncomfortable and unpleasant situations as despite her slight dislike of Kate Tucker and uninterest in women, she nonetheless agreed to go out with her on a date for the sole purpose of attending the game as going with Kate was the only way for her to watch the game.
