The Pokédex Masters (Japanese: 図鑑マスターズ Zukan Masutāzu) are a select group of Pokémon Trainers that were personally selected and entrusted by Professor Oak to become holders of the Pokédex, his own personal creation, which is a digital encyclopedia that gives information about all Pokémon in the world that are contained in its database. Because they are only given to a few Trainers at a time, only Trainers with exceptional potential and skill are deemed worthy of holding a Pokédex, and as a result, they are highly famous and respected.

The Pokédex Masters have become a very tight knit group with many of them bonding with their cohorts in their regional adventures and later with their seniors and juniors, and remained in contact with each other, and would always band together whenever a threat was unleashed upon the Pokémon world.

Robyn Oak became the very first Pokédex holder after Professor Oak deemed him talented enough to be entrusted with one. Because Robyn possessed exceptional skills as a Pokémon Trainer, his Pokédex was proven useful during his journey, gathering data from countless species of Pokémon across Kanto.

Edge became the very second Pokédex holder after an incident in which all the Pokémon from Professor Oak's Laboratory were released, which was a direct result by Edge himself, albeit accidental. One of the Pokémon that escaped was a Bulbasaur that was refusing to be caught and hid inside the Viridian Gym. When Edge went inside the Gym, a Machoke attacked them. Edge realized that the few beams of sunlight coming from a window would allow Bulbasaur to use Solar Beam, which it successfully used after Edge's order to defeat Machoke. Professor Oak witnessed this battle and, amazed by his battling skills, gave him both the Bulbasaur and a Pokédex.

Sometime later, Oak's laboratory was invaded by Roberta, who after hearing about Edge and Robyn receiving a Pokémon, successfully managed to steal a Blastoise from the laboratory, although she wasn't aware of the existence of the Pokédex. Throughout the next several weeks, Edge, Robyn, and Roberta found themselves in conflict against the criminal organization known as Team Rocket, and with the combined efforts of the trio, and their allies, Team Rocket was ultimately defeated and seemingly disbanded.

During the Indigo Plateau Conference, Roberta had a battle against Dr. O, who used a team of Flying-type bird Pokémon, knowing the ornithophobia Roberta acquired after being kidnapped by a bird Pokémon at the age of five. After being defeated by him, his true identity was revealed to be Professor Oak himself, who already knew of her coming from the beginning and had let her steal his Pokémon since it was already intended to be hers. After hearing Roberta's apology and genuine redemption for her actions, Professor Oak deemed her worthy to receive a Pokédex, making Roberta the third official Pokédex holder.

Two years later, after Edge's mysterious and sudden disappearance, Bayley showed up in Professor Oak's laboratory after seeing an injured Pikachu that belonged to Edge, and decided to investigate his whereabouts. Professor Oak refused to let Bayley depart with Pikachu and attacked with his Spearow. Bayley then ordered her Doduo to counter in such a way that neither Pokémon was hurt. Impressed by the connection with her Pokémon and their trust in Bayley, the Professor decided that he should also trust Bayley and gives her Edge's Pokédex to deliver to him. Later on, Edge's, Roberta's, and Robyn's Pokédexes were all upgraded, which was the sole reason Oak had initially demanded them to be returned. Since Robyn's and Roberta's were destroyed by Deoxys, Edge's Pokédex was the only original Pokédex still working, which Edge later gifted to Bayley while she was unconscious, officially making her a Pokédex holder.

When Professor Oak told how the Pokédex can be used in battle, Gold asked for one. The Professor said that Pokédexes are meant for research purposes, and the ones he trusted the device were responsible young people who were willing to help others with their strengths, unlike Gold that only cares about his goal and would reduce it to a tool in battle. After much insistence, the Professor asked how Gold sees his Pokémon, to what the boy replied that they are his "partners". For the good answer, the Pokédex was given to him.

A year later, when Professor Oak told how the Pokédex can be used in battle, Miguel asked for one. The Professor said that Pokédexes are meant for research purposes, and the ones he trusted the device were responsible young people who were willing to help others with their strengths, unlike Miguel who only cared about his goal and would reduce it to a tool in battle. After much insistence, the Professor asked how Miguel sees his Pokémon, to what the boy replied that they were his partners. For the good answer, the Pokédex was given to him, making him the first Johto Pokédex holder.

Shortly after this, a Trainer named Martinez was seen to be in possession of a Pokédex, when he used it in a battle against some Team Rocket Grunts. Several weeks later, Professor Oak explained that it was stolen from his 2nd Research Center in Cherrygrove City, the same way that Martinez stole the Totodile from Professor Elm's laboratory in New Bark Town. He guessed that Martinez was the thief after hearing from Roberta about the time she and Martinez were under the Masked Man's control.

While Professor Oak was looking for a reliable Trainer to collect Pokémon data for him, he got information from Bill that there was a catcher who would do it for something in return. When the Professor went to Earl Dervish's Pokémon academy for the meeting, a bunch of Slugma attacked a little girl. To protect her, a girl named Rosita used her Pokémon and special Poké Balls to catch them all. Amazed by her catching skills, Oak gave her a Pokédex and, in return, repaired the old academy.

During the crisis with Deoxys and Team Rocket, the original seven Pokédex holders, and their allies, joined forces to combat them, and ultimately, with the assistance of Mewtwo and one of the Deoxys, Giovanni and Team Rocket were finally stopped once and for all. After their victory, however, five of the seven Pokédex holders (Edge, Bayley, Roberta, Robyn, and Martinez) were turned into stone statues by Sird.

At the same time as the crisis was going on, in the Hoenn region, a Pokémon Coordinator named Jethro accidentally kept the Pokédex that Professor Birch had for his fieldwork to help him defeat the two Mightyena that were attacking him. When Jethro was going to retrieve Birch's bag, he fell from a cliff, being saved and taken to a cave by a Trainer named Gwendolyn, Birch's daughter. Jethro left her with a letter, telling her to return her father's goods, but forgot the Pokédex in his pocket. In Oldale Town, when he was attacked by a Dustox, the Pokédex resonated and once again helped Jethro to defeat the Pokémon. After this, Jethro decided to keep the Pokédex in order to help him escape from any Pokémon that tried to attack him, and sometime later, Oak properly allowed Jethro to become a recognized Pokédex holder.

Meanwhile, Gwendolyn, after saving Jethro from falling off the cliff, took him to her Secret Base, where they started a scuffle over their different views on Pokémon. In the middle of their battle, a Seviper appeared and attacked them. In order to defeat it, she used a Pokédex to get data about the Pokémon. She explained to Jethro that she was keeping it to help her father in his researches. When her quest on challenging all Gyms in Hoenn started, Gwendolyn took the Pokédex with her, and because of her skills and bravery, she was officially named a Pokédex holder by Professor Oak.

Months later, the frozen Pokédex holders were transported to the Battle Frontier island on the S.S. Anne for their salvation. Meanwhile, the Hoenn Pokédex holders, and their newest addition, Magna, were currently attempting to prevent Guile Hideout from using the monster Kyogre in destroying the island and flooding the world. Ultimately, Magna, with the help from a wish from Jirachi, manages to free the frozen Pokédex holders, who subsequently join the battle against Guile Hideout, and the armored villain is ultimately defeated.

Several years later, the Pokédex holders find themselves facing two threats in different times, with different groups. In the Johto region, the Johto Pokédex holders find themselves in conflict with Arceus and Team Rocket's loyalists, with Giovanni mysteriously absent. When the Masked Man, Pryce, returns from the Crack of Time with Celebi, Pryce exclaims that he was looking for a cure to Giovanni's disease, which was slowly killing him, and together, Martinez and Giovanni battle against Giratina in the Sinjoh Ruins. After Arceus is calmed down and the three Pokémon leave, Ken, Al, Harry, and Celebi arrive with the cure to Giovanni's disease. The cure works, and Giovanni becomes completely healthy again.

Now cured, Giovanni decides to lead Team Rocket once more, as he still has some evil in his heart. He offers Martinez a position in Team Rocket, but Martinez declines and promises to change his father's evil ways one day. Giovanni accepts his son's decision and tells him to grow stronger under Lance and Pryce's teaching in the hopes that they will battle someday.

Some months later, Edge, Roberta, and the Hoenn Pokédex holders find themselves facing off against the Team Magma and Team Aqua leaders Maxie and Archie, respectively, who gained possession of the Red and Blue Orbs and used them to not only summon Groudon and Kyogre, but also revert them to their Primal forms. Despite their best efforts, the Pokédex holders are utterly defeated by the combined effort of Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. With their opponents on the ground, Maxie and Archie gloat over their victory and reveal that their return is all for the sake of saving the planet from the meteoroid threatening to destroy it.

Later, the Kanto Pokédex holders travel to Sootopolis City, where they find Jethro, Gwendolyn, and Magna discussing a plan to destroy the meteoroid. Edge's group demonstrates that despite not being in a battle, activating Mega Evolution is still possible. With this revelation, Giovanni speculates that the meteoroid may actually be a Pokémon from space. Jethro and Gwendolyn manage to set off with Rayquaza into space. With the power of Mega Rayquaza and the combined might of their allies from Hoenn, Kanto and Johto, Jethro and Gwendolyn successfully shattered Grand Meteor Delta into pieces. A Deoxys emerged from the wreckage of the meteoroid, but was defeated when Rayquaza shattered its core, knocking it unconscious. Afterwards, Rayquaza took Jethro and Gwendolyn back down to Earth, where they reunited with the other Pokédex holders. Following this, the Pokédex holders remained at peace, while still remaining in close contact with each other.

Future Edge's Pokédex Masters[]

In the alternate timeline that Future Edge resides in, his life and history was the same as his counterpart's until a certain incident, where Giovanni and Team Rocket engaged in a full-on deathmatch against the Pokédex holders, resulting in everyone, but Future Edge and Giovanni perishing as a result. Ever since then, Future Edge made it his lifelong goal to protect the entire Pokémon world, citing his friend's demises as a "wake-up call", and not wanting anymore evil deeds to be carried out ever again, and began gathering allies across the entire world to aid him, and even establishing a headquarters in Kanto to monitore the entire planet.

Future Edge became aware of Giovanni's plans of gathering allies from across the multiverse to aid him in his goals, as Giovanni searched for Trainers who shared the same goal as he did: Absolute power. As a result, Future Edge employed the help of Celebi to find allies so that Future Edge could battle alongside to stop Giovanni's plans. Through Celebi, Future Edge gained allies in his alternate younger-self, and Trainers whom regions were named after.

The battle begins, and both parties's Pokémon begin to fight each other, while Edge tells Sinnoh to escape and hide. Sinnoh is constantly stopped by the villains, but is saved every time by an ally until Valkyrie chases her down. Edge summons Aerodactyl, who swoops in and takes Sinnoh to safety. On the top of a building, Giovanni watches the battle. Shawn approaches him and asks why Giovanni isn't fighting. He retorts angrily that Shawn is in no position to make demands. Giovanni then pulls out a bomb, and Shawn reminds Giovanni of their partnership and points out he wasn't informed about a bomb; Giovanni answers that the bomb is a Time Bomb, and begins activating it. Shawn gleefully notes that Giovanni intends to erase Future Edge from existence with the bomb, but Giovanni corrects him. The bomb will indeed erase Future Edge, but not only him, but also erase every other alternate timeline from existence, with the exception of Sinnoh herself. Shawn expresses confusion on why Sinnoh would be spared, and Giovanni replies by saying that despite having no Pokémon, Sinnoh had special powers similar to those of a girl he used to know in the past. Shawn then asks if he would be erased as well, and Giovanni calmly thanks Shawn for his help and tells him that his assistance is no longer required.

As the bomb activates, Shawn tries to escape but is swallowed up by the blast. Sinnoh notices the blast and turns to ask Edge for advice; however, Edge is gone. The blast spreads, wiping out the other Trainers one by one, save for Future Edge and Edge, who regroup with Sinnoh, who heroically shield her from the blast. As Future Edge and Edge fade into non-existence, Future Edge hands his Pokémon over to Sinnoh, telling her that she was the only one that could stop Giovanni, as Future Edge and his younger self are completely erased.

Through the efforts of Sinnoh and Celebi, Future Edge and his allies are all restored back to life. Sinnoh and Celebi find Future Edge battling against Shawn and his Glalie before the battle occured, as Shawn was still attempting to take down as many good Trainers across the multiverse as possible. Future Edge, having retained his memories of the battle, regroups with Sinnoh and Celebi, with the former returning him his Pokémon, allowing him to defeat Glalie, although Shawn managed to escape. Having gathered his younger self and Sinnoh's siblings, Future Edge gives them all a pep talks before re-entering his own timeline to battle against Giovanni. Celebi and Sinnoh re-enter Future Edge's timeline just after Giovanni taunted her. Giovanni mocks Sinnoh, stating that she poses absolutely no threat. Sinnoh then summons Celebi, who uses its powers to undo the effects of the Time Bomb, restoring all of the other timelines and its Trainers, much to Giovanni's fury. Shawn attacks Giovanni for his betrayal, only to be knocked away by Latias as the other Trainers continue their fight. Celebi sends all the evil Trainers back to their own timelines, including Shawn.

Left alone, Giovanni roars at Future Edge and his allies in anger. Then, Future Edge calls for Latias, Edge calls for Venusaur, Kanto calls for Zoroark, Hoenn calls for Regigigas, and Johto calls for Lugia. Together, they defeat Giovanni's Pokémon in a series of combination attacks, and Sinnoh delivering a powerful kick that knocks Giovanni out. With Giovanni and his Pokémon defeated, Future Edge handcuffs him and finally claims that his days with freedom are over, and vows to place him in a solitary cell for the rest of his life. In the aftermath, Edge and the Trainer siblings are all returned to their respective timelines by Celebi.
