The new games were revealed in a worldwide Pokémon Presents presentation on February 26, 2021. They are set to release on November 19, 2021 for both retail sale and download. All copies of the game are playable in nine languages: Japanese, English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Korean, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

TheRandomBlock also made an entire Fandom wiki and a reddit based on the BDSP Redesign.

Plot[]

After receiving a video call from Professor Rowan, the player watches a newscast about a sighting of a red Gyarados in the Johto region's Lake of Rage, titled "Search for the Red Gyarados! Lake of Rage's Atrocious Pokémon". The player then heads to their best friend Barry, and heads to Lake Verity with him to search for Legendary Pokémon. When they arrive, they notice Professor Rowan and his assistant (Lucas or Dawn, depending on the player character's gender) discussing the professor's work and his search for something in the lake. The pair notice the player and hurry off, leaving behind Rowan's briefcase. As Barry approaches the briefcase, two wild Starly start to attack. They open the briefcase, containing Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup they must choose from to battle the Starly. Barry, who later becomes the rival, takes the starter Pokémon that has a type advantage over the player's choice.

After battling the Starly, Dawn/Lucas will briefly appear and comment that the Pokémon have been used before exitting the briefcase. Back at Twinleaf Town, the player's mother Johanna gives them an adventure guide before the player leaves for Sandgem Town. When the player meets Professor Rowan in his lab, he gives the player the Pokémon chosen at the lake and the Pokédex. The player then sets off to explore Sinnoh and defeat Gym Leaders in order to advance further in the plot, challenge the Elite Four, and become the Champion of Sinnoh.

During the course of the game, there are many conflicts with the evil team of Sinnoh, Team Galactic, and its leader, Cyrus. When the power of Dialga or Palkia, summoned by Cyrus, begins to overhelm Sinnoh, Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit appear and negate the power flow, and the player is forced to catch the Mega Evolved Pokémon.

Changes from Diamond and Pearl[]

Mechanics inherited from later generations[]

All new elements[]

  • Completely new characters appear in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, like Terra and Cobalt.
  • Aarune, the Secret Base Expert, returns to the game, replacing the Underground Man. Byron's grandfather is now unknown.
  • Cosplay Pachirisu can be obtained. Like the Cosplay Pikachu, this is a special female Pachirisu that is able to swap one of its moves it knows by changing the costume in the Super Contest Hall.

Changes to Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum elements[]

Aesthetic changes[]

  • The physical Sinnoh Pokédex has been redesigned, now appearing similar to a New Nintendo 3DS.
    • The male player character has a red Pokédex. However, the female player character now has a lavender Pokédex, instead of a red one. This might be an anime reference, as Mamie owned a lavender Pokédex.
  • Lucas and Dawn have completely different attires, with Lucas having a long-sleeved undershirt and a high-collared vest, while Dawn replaces her mini-dress and skirt with a sleeveless leather jacket and puffy shorts, respectively.
  • Team Galactic has also given new designs. The glowing sections in the Commanders' uniforms are here to embody the feeling of "brilliant" and "shining".
  • The Sinnoh Gym Leaders, Elite Four, Stat Trainers, and other Trainers were redesigned with updated appearances.

Location changes[]

  • Game Corner has been closed, because game corners are not featured after Generation V.
  • Poké Marts and Pokémon Center Cafes are now part of a Pokémon Center.
  • Metronome Style Shops and Metronome Style Parlors are added in those cities: Jubilife, Hearthome, Veilstone, and Snowpoint.
  • The Gym battlefields have been redesigned to look like the Vermilion Gym in Pokémon Journeys.
  • All Gyms received minor redesigns.
  • Great Marsh now does not serve as a Safari Zone. Instead, it serves as a Wild Area for many Pokémon living in Sinnoh.
  • The Underground has all items available from start. Additions include the fossils from later generations, the Shiny, Dusk, Dawn and Ice Stones, and the Pixie Plate.

Gameplay changes[]

  • Secret Bases have been completely upgraded, becoming Super Secret Bases. Features include sharing bases with other players, inviting other players as secret pals, capturing flags, and customizing the player's own Gym.
  • Battle Tower has no special Pokémon banned from the Battle Tower, meaning Legendary Pokémon like Dialga and Mythical Pokémon like Zeraora are also eligible to participate.
  • The Gym Leaders' order is like in Platinum.
  • Wild Pokémon now only appear in the overworld, like in the Let's Go games, known as "random encounters".

Story[]

  • Like Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode focusing on Rayquaza, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl features the Renegade Episode (Japanese: エピソード レネゲード Episode Renegade) following the player's first completion of the Sinnoh League.
    • After completing the Renegade Episode, Rowan will offer the player to choose a Galar starter Pokémon.

Battles[]

  • Roark and Gardenia have two Pokémon in their Gym Battle teams instead of three.
  • Barry replaces his Snorlax with a Skarmory, which is an obvious anime reference. He also Mega Evolves his starter starting in the fifth battle.
  • Fantina has her Platinum Gym Leader team.
  • Maylene replaces her Machoke with a Mienfoo.
  • Crasher Wake replaces his Quagsire with a Gastrodon.
  • Byron, Candice, and Volkner have their Platinum Gym Battle teams.
  • The Elite Four, except Lucian, have their Platinum teams. Their last Pokémon is always their Mega Evolved ace: Drapion for Aaron, Hippowdon for Bertha, and Infernape for Flint.
  • Lucian has his Diamond and Pearl team. He Mega Evolves his last Pokémon Bronzong, and replaces his Girafarig with a Gallade.
  • The Elite Four all have lower level teams, the same level as in Platinum.
  • Cynthia's team, the same as in Platinum, has gained one more level.
  • Cyrus's Weavile and Cynthia's Garchomp can Mega Evolve.

Other[]

Renegade Episode[]

After becoming the Champion of the Sinnoh Region, it has been discovered that Distortion Holes have been opening up all over Sinnoh, irradiating the region bit by bit. It's up to YOU to stop the holes from continuing to irradiate the Sinnoh region, and with it, the world.
