This Steelix is Poli’s 7th Pokémon from Kanto.

Biography

As Onix

Steelix debuted as an Onix where it was sleeping in Diglett’s Cave when Poliwag accidentally tossed a rock at its head. Angry, it attacked Poliwag, and fought Poli's Crobat who managed to pacify it with cross poison. It eventually let itself get caught.

Onix was never used in battle until Blaine’s gym battle, where it battled his Arcanine. Although it was able to withstand Arcanine’s attacks, it wasn’t able to beat its speed and loses to a switched in Magmar.

Onix was used to battle Giovanni’s Persian after Crobat was defeated. Onix was able to use Dig to confound Persian, but it couldn’t keep up. It then learns rock polish, exponentially increasing its speed so it could keep up with and beat Persian.

Onix was then sent back to Oak’s lab in exchange for Snorlax, but later brought back in place of Crobat for Poli’s elite 4 challenge. Its had the least appearances of the team, only defeating Bruno's Onix and Agatha's Golbat. It later battles Blue's Butterfree and wins, and is defeated by Mega Charizard X.

Onix was recalled to replace Beedrill so it could hang out with Lila’s Beedrill with Poliwag. He battles against a Rhydon, which was a neutral matchup. The Pokémon mostly used dig and clashed underground , causing earthquakes. Eventually, they surfaced with Onix having learnt Bind to catch Rhydon while clashing its horn against its drill nose. Onix then learns Iron Tail to hammer Rhydon‘s drill nose, defeating it. When Poliwag and Beedrill returned, Onix was returned to Oak’s lab.

Later, Lila gave Poli a Metal Coat she found due to her Meowth had the Ability Pickup, in case if Onix needed to evolve. While heading to Johto, Poli transferred Onix over who still had the Metal Coat that Poli gave to him. Once sent out of its Poke Ball, he subsequently evolved into a Steelix. With his new evolution, he was brought to Johto alongside Poliwag.

As Steelix

Johto

Steelix was first used to battle Falkner's Pidgeotto. He was revealed to have learnt Dragon Breath after evolving, which it used to dispatch Pidgeotto. Steelix was then used against his Noctowl, but it was simply too fast for it, and was switched out into Poliwag.

Steelix was then seen helping catch a wild Octillery it enocuntered nearby. It was at the upper hand when it got hit by a single Hydro Pump, which caused it to flinch slightly, but a subsequent hit caused it to attempt to hide with Dig but failed due to suction Cups. Octillery then defeated Steelix with another Hydro pump.

Steelix was later healed while Poliwag kept Octillery busy. Steelix, embarrassed, shoved Poliwag away and rams Octillery with Iron Head in retaliation for its disgrace, defeating it and letting it be caught.

Later, Steelix was seen trying to overcome its fear of water by learning Surf, but had to be withdrawn after being unable to do so.

Steelix and Poli then meet Jasmine, whose own Steelix helped Steelix learn Gyro Ball. The 2 Steelix then spend some time together, with Poli's picking up Heavy Slam and Stone Edge while training. Poli and Steelix then part ways with the steel type Gym Leader.

Steelix, full of energy after all the training, lifts Poli on his back and starts moving to Azalea Town, where he helps dispatch the 2 grunts at the bottom of Slowpoke Well. Steelix then battles Bugsy at the gym, using its new techniques to power through it.

Steelix later gets jealous of Beedrill's Mega Stone, so goes digging for its own. It tunnels so deep under Azalea town until it finally found one, but to its shock it was simply a marble instead. Frustrated, it continues digging for more but only found multiple marbles. Poli then tells the jealous Iron Snake Pokeon that it will get its own one day, pacifying it.

Steelix was used against whitney's Miltank after Octillery, Crobat and Chikorita all lose to it. He miraculously resists attract despite being male, likely due to having no interest in romance (which was shown in a flashback where Onix catches Professor oak watching a Romantic Comedy but simply ignores it). He then clashes with Rollout with Gyro Ball, and ultimately knocks Miltank out.

Steelix was then swapped out for Natu, but returns to battle its training partner. During this time, Steelix was revealed to have learned the elemental fangs, which allowed it to get the jump on its opponent. However, the opposing Steelix Mega evolves and starts a Sandstorm, utilising Sand Force to nearly decimate Steelix, but then Steelix realises its not taking damage from the Sandstorm. Afterwards, it uses Dig and Dragon Breath to destroy the spikes Jasmine's Steelix had set up before hand and slightly damages it. Both Pokemon then use Bind on each other, neither lessening up their grip. Steelix eventually come out on top by learning Steel beam to blast away Jasmine's, earning its Steelixite in the process. That said, after seeing how its ability when mega evolved is only situationally useful, it decided to reject it.

Steelix was seen deliberating about mega evolving while looking at his Steelixite, remembering how Beedrill went berserk when trying to do so. He decided he wasn’t ready yet and decides to train himself to be ready.

Poli and Steelix are seen training hard to avoid the berserk ness of mega evolution when they encounter a wild Sudowoodo who wants to battle. During the battle, Steelix loses the Steelixite ti Sudowoodo, and Steelix is forced to chase the much faster Pokémon. During teh chase, Steelix once again thinks about mega evolution’s drawbacks of losing its Sturdy ability in favor of a nearly useless ability, but much better defenses. While thinking about it, Steelix loses track of Sudowoodo and the Steelixite. Poli then sends out Natu, Bayleef and Octillery to split up and find the imitation Pokémon while Poliwag and Steelix stuck with him. Eventually, the 5 of them converge in the same part of the woods and corner sudowoodo. Sudowoodo then duels Steelix again and loses, running away in shame as Steelix gets its Mega Stone back.

Steelix decides to give mega evolution a try at Pryce’s gym after much deliberation. It then battles Pryce’s Dewgong using its mass and weight to crush Dewgong, who simply slips out of view. Steelix, desperate tio unleash its mega evolution’s true potential, learns sandstorm to power up its attacks, defeating Dewgong. Pryce’s Piloswine is then used to battle Mega Steelix, able to stall out the sandstorm. When Steelix tries to set up one again, it is defeated by Sheer Cold.

Steelix battles against Clair’s Dragonite during their gym battle, opting not to mega evolve this time due to wanting to keep sturdy. Steelix’s use of Dragon Breath in the battle got mocked by Clair, so much that he evolved the Attack into Dragon Pulse. After defeating Dragonite, Kingdra’s flamethrower heavily damaged Steelix, forcing it to mega evolve to eat the hit before setting up another sandstorm. Using the sandstorm as cover, Steelix homes in on Kingdra and defeats it with Stone Edge.

Steelix was used to battle Silver's Murkrow after Xatu was downed by it. Using its iron hide, he crushes Murkrow with Heavy Slam while muscling through its attacks. In the quarter finals, Steelix was defeated by Ethan's Houndoom's Flamethrower, but it also dealt heavy damage to it anyway.

Steelix was left at Professor oak's Lab when poliwag went to Hoenn.

Hoenn

Steelix was briefly brought back by Poli when Oak told him that Steelix had found something "of interest." He then later presents Lila's Swampert with a Swampertite he found while digging a while back, aftwerwards he was returned to Oak's Lab.

Steelix was used to battle May's Blaziken duirng the Ever Grande Conference. Although he is weak to fire, he manages to deal heavy damage to Blaziken and Ko it. He then battles Nosepass and is attracted by Magnet Pull, which he tries and fails to escape from. In spit eof this, he manages to use a close range Fire Fang on Nosepass' nose to weaken its magnetic effect, then finishes off Nosepass with a sacrifical Steel Beam.

In the semi finals, he battle's Lila's Latios, and was struggling to hit the airborne Eon Pokemon, but he uses Dig and Dragon Pulse underground to boost himself to Latios' height and strike Latios with Bind. Even though Latios manages too free himself with Luster Purge, Steelixkos him with Iron Head, being the first of Poli's Pokemon to take down a Legendary. Unfortunately, that battle took up so much of his energy that he's quickly defeated by Swampert's Liquidation aftwerwards.

Sinnoh

Poli, Cattie and Lila run into Steelix in the Sinnoh Underground, where he was revealed to have dug a hole from oak's Lab all the way there, and like sto spend his time there. He later inspects a Mega Stone Lila' Lopunny found and deduced it belonged to the Rabbit pokemon as its species' mega Stone.

Personality

Onix has a sturdy body and even sturdier heart. It was shown to be the wall of the team when Snorlax is absent, but rarely was it able to do damage. That said, Onix still tries very hard to overcome battles before it.

Since his evolution from Onix to Steelix, he became more powerful but also slower. He often relies on his Defense and Gyro Ball to get kos and is easily checked by much faster pokemon. That said, Steelix is also revealed to be afraid of water due to its typing's weakness. It was also revealed to despise humiliation, as shown when it angrily rammed Octillery after losing due to its weakness.

Steelix also wants to Mega evolve someday, as shown by that one time it went in search of its Mega Stone, which it finally obtained after beating Jasmine's Steelix, but is quick to reject it after realizing its limited utility. It was shown Steelix is not ready to Mega Evolve yet, because he was worried he may go crazy like Beedrill did when it first Mega Evolved. He is later shown to have a Fire weakness since it evolved.

After the mishap in Johto, Steelix was shown to have learnt to identify most Mega stones, which allowed him to deduce which pokemon a mega stone is meant for by simply looking at it. He attributes it to spending a lot of time in the Sinnoh underground.

Moves Used

• Tackle: Onix headbutts the foe.
• Rock Throw: Onix creates a rock on its forehead, which it then slams with its tail, sending it toward the foe.
• Rock Polish: Onix glows white and it’s body appears to be scratched before flashing white for brief second.
• Rock Tomb: Onix summons multiple rocky boulders around it, then send them flying toward the opponents.
• Dig: Onix/Steelix burrows into the Ground and ambushes the opponent.
• Bind: Onix/Steelix wraps itself around the foe and strangles them.
• Iron Tail: Onix/Steelix changes its tail into a metallic texture, then slams it into the foe.
• Dragon Breath: Steelix fires a green beam from its mouth at the opponent.
• Iron Head: A jagged shiny pattern appears on Steelix's forehead and it charges at the opponent with its head.
• Heavy Slam: Steelix jumps into the air and a silver aura surrounds its body. It then slams its body onto the opponent.
• Stone Edge: Steelix slams into the ground, causing multiple jagged light blue spiked stones come out of the ground. They then turn to gray before exploding and hitting the opponent.
• Gyro Ball: Some of Steelix's spikes glow light blue and spin around fast, with a light-blue ring surrounding Steelix.
• Elemental fangs:Steelix surrounds its teeth with fire/ice/electricity before biting down in the foe.
• Steel Beam: Steelix gathers up silver energy from its spikes, then fires a powerful silver laser at the opponent.
• Sandstorm:Steelix(both normal and mega) spins its spikes at high speed to whip up a storm, kicking up nearby dirt in the process.
• Dragon Pulse:Steelix forms a purple fireball in its mouth, then spits its out hard as a pulse of energy.

Ability activated

• Sturdy: Onix/Steelix is able to take a finishing blow once.
• Sand Force:In a sandstorm, Mega Steelix’s rock/ground/steel moves do more damage,

Trivia

• Steelix the second Steel-type that Poli owns up to this point, the first being Melmetal.
• Coincidentally, Steelix is also the first Pokemon to evolve through trading with an item, in this case, a Metal Coat.
• Steelix's evolution may be a similar reference to Goh's Scyther evolving into Scizor in the episode "Searching for Chivalry" from Pokemon Journeys, and Misty's Poliwhirl into Politoed in the episode "Outrageous Fortunes" from Pokemon Master Quest.
• Steelix's scituation in the ever Grande Conference was similar to ash's Sceptile in the Lily of the Valley Conference where they expend so much energy to defeat a Legendary that they were defeated by the next Pokemon sent out.
